After lights on this morning I saw 2 or 3 these tiny snails cruising around. Their bodies look like Nassarius (large flat foot, long siphon). Is it possible that the adult Nassarius have successfully reproduced? Do they develop from free-swimming larvae (unlikely to survive in my tank) or do they crawl away from deposited egg cases as miniature adults?

Here's a pic of the small snail, ~2-3mm long.

Here's a YouTube video I found of what is claimed to be a Nassarius egg case with crawl-away juveniles. We do occasionally see small round white things on the glass that may be egg cases like this. I typically scrape them away in the weekly glass cleaning, but other may well survive on the back wall since I don't scrape that surface.

My only real hesitation that these may NOT be Nassarius (or at least not produced by my resident adults) is that my adults have very ridged shells and these tiny guys have very smooth, shiny shells.

Thanks for any tips!

(Crossing my fingers that these little guys aren't some kind of coral devouring nuisance.)

Yes. They get formed to eggs that are atatched to rocks or glass. Comonly found in circles or zigzags. Its kinda white/clear and sringgy.

Yes they do produce in our tanks. It appears that the young are vulnerable and "tasty" so few make it to adult hood but I've had several broods/batches do this in my tanks over the years. Thank goodness because my crabs LOVE to eat them.

That first pic is of a peppermint snail in the marginella family. They feed on microfauna and are considered harmless to reefs. I've had them for years and never seen one longer than 1/4" long. Here is a pic of one of mine. At first there was only a couple, but after a year or two there were a couple dozen.

Do you have the blue leg crab or any other crabs in your tank? I'm thinking getting some snails, but I'm afraid of my only blue leg crab will eat them all!
