Do You Quarantine?

Do you quarantine your new livestock? If so, what is your procedure? (i.e. length of time)

Do you quarantine fish only or both fish and corals?

Do you perform any precautionary dips for fish and/or corals?

I have no fish to quarantine

I quarantine everything. At least a day, sometimes longer. As a result, no nuissance aiptasia or flatworms EXCEPT in my quarantine tank. I take that down, clean everything, and set it up again. No parasites on my fish, etc. Corals only go into quarantine for a very short period. Hours to maybe a day at the most. Make sure nothing hitches a ride and that's it.

My LFS quarantines my fish and usually runs UV and copper in their tanks.

I quarintine fish, but coral only get a dip and a wash then they go into the tank. Inverts just get acclimated according the differnce between the water they came from and mine, then dumped in. Sometimes I give them a pep talk, but that just depends on how they are feeling.

my LFS is owned by my friends so i have a QT tank there that i use for stuff i want. Guess im lucky. I use it to put rock/corals and fish in. The rock is what I keep in it the longest to make sure theres no unwanted critters on it. the fish are second and the corals are put there by the owner when he gets stuff he thinks i might want.

Only when I want to keep my fish. I try to make it a week, but sometimes I become impatient and the fish doesn't even make it into the quarantine tank?
Corals get a thorough check up, and off they go.

I don't but before I buy a fish I watch it for a long long time and also this depends on the LFS as I won't go near some of them.

One of my co-workers beleives that he doesn't need a QT tank because he runs a UV. Somehow this didn't make sense to me. Am I wrong?

No you are not wrong. A UV is good for somethings that go thru it with the water flow. But why put them into your tank to start with. What about internal parasites?

agreed Uv is a good way of helping to prevent but wont do much for a fish that already has it.

Ray I thought you said you just throw the infected fish in with the rest of the healthy fish???

If it is Ich, yes I do.

it sounds like you are saying that it is safe to throw in fish directly into a tank as long aws you have a UV attached to it. The LFS fish may have parasites and die, but the existing fish should be OK.

I know I should be but I only have a 29g nano and space is at a premium. If I had the quarantine tank it would take up just about as much space ans my regular tank...

My LFS quarantines for two weeks before he puts them up for sale. He wants to keep happy returning customers. I know he does as he's a good friend and runs a great resonsible business.

No we are saying the opposite. A UV does not make it safe.

Mike and me disagree on ICH, as to how deadly it is. I think of the parasites and diseases like in human terms. Flu is not deadly to a heathy human with a healthy immune system. On the other hand Smallpox, Thyphoid, and the plague can be very deadly to the same healthy human. With fish I consider Ich in the flu catagory. Mike considers it in the Plague catagory.
