Ray/Mike,
it sounds like you are saying that it is safe to throw in fish directly into a tank as long aws you have a UV attached to it. The LFS fish may have parasites and die, but the existing fish should be OK.
Did I say that Erwin, lol. I actually believe the opposite my friend. i have seen many folks do this and loose all thier fish. So nope not me. A UV will help kill Ich larve if the larvae passing through it. but it wont do anything for a fish that has it already.
Mike and me disagree on ICH, as to how deadly it is. I think of the parasites and diseases like in human terms. Flu is not deadly to a heathy human with a healthy immune system. On the other hand Smallpox, Thyphoid, and the plague can be very deadly to the same healthy human. With fish I consider Ich in the flu catagory. Mike considers it in the Plague catagory.
Wow did I say that lol. amn I swear I must have an evil twin that is speaking for me when I am not watching.

Except for 1 occasion, I've always QTd fish into this tank. This is mainly to prevent ich and Almyoodinium. I try for a 4-week QT. For grazing fish that may be difficult to get to take prepared foods like a mandarin, QT has been as short as 2 weeks. I try to set up the tank to give such fish enough graze, but its a small volume, so typically the graze runs out. I have encountered one external parasite during a QT period, which only became evident because the fish was QTd (visible egg case developed). I believe I have also encountered Almyoodiunium on a new fish in QT. Strangely, I've never encountered ich. Anyway, in my limited experience, using a QT for fish is a good idea.

I brought all my clams in as a batch order and did a 7-day QT. These later had to be dipped for the pinching condition that didn't start to show up until about 2 weeks after I got them. One of the clams took the treatment (FW dip) very hard and was kept isolated in a QT for over a month until it looked fully recovered. FWIW this clam survived on DTs (or its own energy reserves) and PC lighting for that entire period.

Other invertebrates and plants have gone directly into the system. The only pest I've picked up off of either, to the best of my knowledge, was a sundial snail, which was easy enough to find and remove. A shipment of live sand brought aiptasia into my system. Some rock from a tank being torn down brought in red flatworms. Neither has become a plague, but I wish I had taken measures to prevent them.

Do you quarantine your new livestock? If so, what is your procedure? (i.e. length of time)

Quarantining the fish is important but it depends on the number of stocking tanks that are available at that time and the number of fish as well as the client's wish. you see some of the clients are other retailers who would much rather do their own quarantining, with their own procedures. Quarantining for me is usually a minimum of three days for most fishes.

Do you quarantine fish only or both fish and corals?

Both. In India though there isn't a clear picture of which all corals are under the protected species list, so only anemones, leathers, mushrooms, etc are quarantined.

Do you perform any precautionary dips for fish and/or corals?

For fishes a freshwater dip of 30 to 60 seconds depending on the fishes condition on arrival, water condition such as ph and salinity in the fishes bag and the reaction of the fish in freshwater.
For inverts depends on the bag water conditions, but not for more than 60 seconds, as some really do not like the osmotic shock.

Sad that I am in the majority and I don't quaranteen. I know, I know, everyone preaches.. somethings you just have to learn the hard way. I'm going on 9 years though and been ok so far (knock on wood).

WOW the results really surprised me, so far 62% of voters are not using a quarantine!

RF is the place that got me into the habit of QTing in the first place!!

So far we are only using the QT for fish, but, when we come back from MCMAC everything (corals, maybe a clam) will be going in there before our display.

This poll is over 3 years old. It would be interesting to see if the general concensus has changed since then.

I QT fish when going into an existing tank . Usually for 2-3 weeks and so far I only needed to hospitalize two fish . I run UV in all my tanks and in QT .
