Does anyone buffer their topoff water?

Im starting a new batch now as I write this... I will let it mix overnite and I will post numbers after mixing, I didnt write down the numbers from the last mix. I remember the calcium was at 480.

Thats what I was getting at. You will always have very high ca 450+ with oceanic. So if your doing water changes with it the ca should actually be high. To balance oceanic you have to get the alk upwards of 16+ dkh thats alot of baking soda added to fresh sw mix especially since oceanic is always low in terms of alk to begin with.

So in short if your not adding loads of alk suppliment to your waterchange mix your lowering your alk with each water change.

So Im working against myself...nice... So for my new 20 gallon mix you would make the Alk 16 or better on each batch until I get to the 8.0 dkh.

First off when you do a water change you need to adjust the salt to be balanced if you dont your just creating an imbalance.
Oceanic is the worse salt in tems on trying to get a balance. The numbers are unrealistic so dont try to get the dkh up to 16.
I would switch salt before I tried to hit those numbers. IO or RC are much closer. In fact if you mix IO properly it will be very close and only needs a little Mg added.
You can just dose a bunch of alk suppliment slowly directly to your tank to bring it up but next time you do a water change its going to be off again.

Im going to have to deal with this until I use the 1 1/2 buckets of oceanic before I switch...

You dont have to throw it out. You can mix it with IO to bump up the MG level in IO and if you mix with a ph you will also need to bump up the ca. You would have to experiment a little but something like 75% IO 25% oceanic would be a good place to start.

Im not going to throw it away...my wife would kill me  anyway I went looking and I found RC on sale for $ 31 a bucket at FosterandSmith guess I could pick up a few buckets and start mixing.

no but id like to dose my ATo with a magic "stay clean" for ever pill so i dont have to clean my Ro tank ever,

could i dose my RO tank?

all i know is that is how i have added buffer to my tanks for over 10 years and my tanks have been great in so far as ca and alk levels. i add the weekly dose of alk buffer to the top off water, then the calcium directly to the tank.(at different times, of coarse, and i follow the directions for amounts used) there has never been any issues with funky ca or alk levels or stability with the way i do things. growth levels, coloration, polyp extention all que me in to whats going on...
and it will probably distress you guys further to learn that usually i dont even test for ca or alk on a regular basis, mabye once or twice a season just to make sure everything is still good. and it usually is spot on. granted at this stage of the game, i could probably dose with my eyes closed and one hand tied behind my back and get it right.

testing for mag, phos, 'trates is something that happens with much more frequency for me, as those items are more difficult to determine with test results unseen. ca, alk, ph, i can determine if there is a deficency just by looking at my corals...mabye im a reef psychic! lol

there is more than one way to do things that works, and what works for one, might not work for another, so im not saying to do what i do...
