Hello Terry,

I have a 5 year old Dog Face Puffer that has real bad cloudy eyes, dust all over his body and it looks like his tail is a little red. He has not eaten today. I have been treating him with garlic guard by Seachem for the last week, raised the tank temperature to 80 degrees and have started day 2 of Mardel's Maracyn.

Any thoughts

Thanks so much

Adam

Hi Adam,

Did you add a new fish witout quarantine? A fine biege dust may be amyloodinium. Is the fish breathing rapidly and scratching? Ich spots get a bit larger and look like grains of salt on the fish so the spots may get larger. Maracyn isn't much use in saltwater. It sound like the fish may have a secondary bacterial infection along with parasites. The best treatment for ich is hyposalinity. You can use an antibiotic with it and some antibiotics with copper. If it is Amyloodinium then you will need to act fast (all the fish would be sick if it is amyloodinium). If it is amyloodinium then you probably better use copper. The only copper that I would use with a puffer is Cupramine by Seachem. Test the level twice a day. Please see this link for a five part series on ich:

Sick Dog Face Puffer

Terry,

Thanks

The puffer is now breathing rapidly, not eating and his eyes are badly covered with white. He is going to the bathroom in the form of a white cloud that looks like cream.

Is Hyposalinity a product?
Can I start the Cupramine now and will it kill the live rock and sand.

My local fish store owner told me Maracyn should do it. Interesting that you say it does not work well in saltwater.

It looks like he is on his last legs and I do not know where to start.

Help

Thanks

Adam

Adam - Welcome to Reef Frontiers! How are your water parameters? Hyposalinity is when you bring the salinity of your water down (do you have a refractometer?). Do you have a quarantine tank to place the fish in? There are a couple of articles Terry wrote about treatment methods, as follow ups to his articles on Fish Disease Identification, maybe they can be of help: Treatment of Choice part 1, and Treatment of Choice part 2. In part one I noticed Terry indicates there is a difference between Maracyn and Maracyn-Two...they are not the same antibiotic. Part 2 does have information about hyposalinity.

Hope your fish will be on the mend soon. You might also benefit from Terry's individual and indepth consultation service.

Nikki,

Thanks
In regards to parameters, everything looked good except the alcaline is high and the salinity is high. Is a refractometer what reads the salinity? if it is I have two one that looks like a thermometer and the one that holds water and provides a salinity reading. I do not have a quarantine tank though the puffer is alone with no other fish. I will read Terry's articles.

Thanks

Adam
