Just so you guys know as of 2007, although you guys may not see it for awhile, DOW has announced that the Bromide in all their CaCl2 will go from its normal ~150 ppm to 8,000 ppm. And Bromide levels in salt mixes now are already at 200-600 ppm Bromide. NSW is 65 ppm.

Current salt mixes. Actually Bromide not Bromine

What DOW is doing to all their CCl2

Why ? DOW use to be the worlds largest supplier for Bromide and Bromine. This was extracted for the DOW CaCl2 method. DOW has Left the Bromide/Bromine product line and are not going to change the process but just leave the Bromide in which they use to extract.

Although 200-600 may be safe it is a real pain for ozonated tanks. Now couple that to the future sup's and more than likely sea salts being already high will now be reallllllllllllllly high. The salt manufactures are going to have to do something here and the same for sup's

The best CaCl2 are those that use the HCl Acid/Limestone process, such as those form Tetra Chemicals

I would like to thank "Cham" for bring this to my attention. I talked to Julian the other day and he will probably start to make changes in C-Balance in the future.

I'm going into the carx and kalk rx business. JK, but I'm sure they will be poping up all over the place. Would it do any good to carbon filter our newly mix SW?

Don

Bummer...If I am understanding correctly, when I setup another tank, I will make provisions to filter the NSW found around here in the Bahamas for my tank.

Nope Don, you can ot filter out Bromide with GAC anymore than you can filter out chloride with GAC.

I'm still waiting for a e-mail from Randy to see what he thinks about the issue.

That a drag, so how is this going to affect the use ozone?

ozone will convert bromide into bleach(in short) thats why anyone that runs ozone should filter the water comming from there ozone reactor/skimmer with GAC. its not the ozone your trying to filter but what it makes

That I already new. Is it not going to be possible or is it just going to be more difficult to make sure its gone.
But since we are on the subject. Since ozone converts the bromide. Would it be possible to use ozone to bring down the bromide levels in freshly mixed SW. or is it really a concern.

Don

I use "Dry-Z-Air" which, I assume, is the same as DOW Pellets. Will this also affect this product?

Yes it should effect all of their ca chloride products if i'm understaning correctly. Dow no longer needs the bromide so they are just going to leave it where it was to begin with.

Of the abbreviations for salt mixes listed in the table, the only ones I can decipher are IO and TM. Would somebody mind translating the ones with the lowest bromide readings so I know what they are?

Thanks...

CSM=crystal sea marine mix

TM= tropic marin

CSB= crystal sea bio essay

So I'm not Chemistry genius of any kind...lol. How will this effect the way I mix my Ca supplement using Dry Z Air? I don't use Ozone.

I think Boomer is waiting to hear back from Randy to see how the excess bromide is going to effect our tanks.

Don

Sorry about that :D
