If you had a 12" diameter tube in a display say 12" tall filled with sand. Would the entire depth be a useful DSB?

Don

I would think in time if churned by creatureas a DSB keeps, then eventually It should allow for more of a sink! Short answer yes eventually.

I would figure you'd only need to go as deep as you would find an anaerobic zone, but maybe seeing the tube is only 12 inches in diameter, the deeper you go, the more surface area you'd have for the necessary bacteria to grow for dentitrification to take place. Not sure man...Just thinking out loud:) What are you trying to accomplish?

Would that same tube be as beneficial for N reduction as a 12"x12" chunk of LR?

I guess it all depends on the type of rock used as some are better suited for denitrification than others. I'd probably take my chances with the rock over the sand for denitrification. Sand requires too much up keep IMO and can eventually crash as we have seen happen time and time again. All a rock mostly needs is good flow IMO. :)

I'm thinking about columns. I may just build some out of solid LR or slice lr and stick it to acrylic tube.
I'm converting my tank to a big clam bed with little lr and only a few established sps.

Fish in Tank?

Don what kind of fish do you have in this tank? What kind of stocking goal do you have? If your going with Clams are you going to keep a wrasse?

I dont have any wrasse's. Just 3 Tangs, 2 clowns, damsel and a lawnmower.
If I add up the shell length I have 45" of clams.:)

Talk about a Nitrate Sponge

Wow that will get that tank clean! Have you thought about getting a wrasse to watch over them clams?:)

I've never had a wrasse. I have assumed one would starve in my tank. Its very strile has almost no small life like pods to feed a wrasse.

fluidized bed filter

add a little flow under i and it would be a fluidized bed filter other wise i think it would do nothing but harbor hydrogen sulfide after abou 4 inches grain size would play an important factor as well

I added a one gallon jar almost full but put it in a DSB, so it would be difficult to gauge the effects. For what it is worth I saw no black stuff when I pulled it out.

Thanks for posting Scooterman

Don I have watched my Leopards go from pod hunting to anything that hits the tank they love I started mine on Mysis but have them eating pellets and Nori my tangs have taut them to eat Nori and they go crazy when i put a 1/2 sheet in the tank. I would not recommend a sixline they are a ton easier to get to eat prepared foods but they are truly the meaner wrasse
It would chase my Anthias and was very mean to my clowns.
With that tank having clams do some reading on what relationship wrasses have with clams;)

They would do well on spectrum pellets or mush of some sort.
