If you had a 12" diameter tube in a display say 12" tall filled with sand. Would the entire depth be a useful DSB?

I would think in time if churned by creatureas a DSB keeps, then eventually It should allow for more of a sink! Short answer yes eventually.
Would that same tube be as beneficial for N reduction as a 12"x12" chunk of LR?
I would figure you'd only need to go as deep as you would find an anaerobic zone, but maybe seeing the tube is only 12 inches in diameter, the deeper you go, the more surface area you'd have for the necessary bacteria to grow for dentitrification to take place. Not sure man...Just thinking out loud What are you trying to accomplish?
I'm thinking about columns. I may just build some out of solid LR or slice lr and stick it to acrylic tube.
I'm converting my tank to a big clam bed with little lr and only a few established sps.
Don
Don what kind of fish do you have in this tank? What kind of stocking goal do you have? If your going with Clams are you going to keep a wrasse?
I dont have any wrasse's. Just 3 Tangs, 2 clowns, damsel and a lawnmower.
If I add up the shell length I have 45" of clams.
Don
Wow that will get that tank clean! Have you thought about getting a wrasse to watch over them clams?
Would that same tube be as beneficial for N reduction as a 12"x12" chunk of LR?
I've never had a wrasse. I have assumed one would starve in my tank. Its very strile has almost no small life like pods to feed a wrasse.
Don
They would do well on spectrum pellets or mush of some sort.
