I just set up my tank with two over flows with durso stand pipes. I am having problems getting it quiet. I have an adjustable air hose in the top of each standpipe which allows me to get rid of any gurgle or flushing effect.

The area that most of the noise comes from is the sump and the pipes as it goes into the sump. I have a fairly loud bubling noise where the water enters the sump. The inleets are about an inch below the surface. There is also a lot of noise in the pipes close to the sump. It sounds like there is a lot of cavitation in the pipes. I also have alot of micro bubbles.

It seems like all these problems are coming from the same thing, air in the pipes that gives me cavitation in the pipes and the bubbling noise in the sump.

Has anyone else had this problem? I tried adjusting the air hose at the top but that only seemed to help the standpipe gurgle and water level in the overflow. I thought about adding some extra bends to slow the flow down.

Hi Dennis, I had the same problem with mine when I set up. The problem is you will always have air in the pipes because of the vent holes on the Durso's. Slowing the flow down is one way of quietening things down.
Another mod you can try is to put a T piece on the end of the plumbing that runs into the sump. Have the T pointing up and down with the bottom pipe being the outlet into the sump. On the top put a riser tube with an end cap and drill lots of holes into it. This will help vent off some of the air coming through the pipes.
Hope that makes sense :)

Just trying to paint a picture of this mod. Is similar to what your suggesting.
Just stumbled onto this thread and now I'm trying to figure out what your suggesting.

actually the idea is the same, but I think you have it labeled differently. The water should drop straight through, with the branch out laterally being to the cap with holes. basically you just have teh labels backwards.

Okay.. I was trying to take words and paint a picture out of it. The way you're saying now makes more sense. The way I had it might restrict some flow back to the sump.

Thanks BC
