Well, question before the house!! I don't have much exposure to "dyed" or "altered" corals here in Spokane, but I'm wondering who has!

How can you tell it is dyed when you are in the store??

Have you ever seen one?? Accidentally bought one?

Will the coral live once it expells the dye?

Ethically, what are your thoughts???

I'd love to hear everyone's opinions on this... I have mine of course :tape2: lol

:help:

Only one I've see in person was one that was shipped to Barrier once. They didn't purposely order it that way of course. I think it was an anemone but can't remember exactly. I'd avoid dyed corals personally since it shows who ever captured/collected it doesn't give 2 !@#!'s about the critters they harvest.

Dyed animals still an unfortunate reality in the reef aquarium hobby

Dyed sebae nems are common in the hobby

Leathers also get abused for cash

The way I look at it, same as dipping a kitten in chemicals to make it more salable. We spend a lot of money trying to keep impurities OUT of our aquariums, and away from our creatures that we assume responsibility for.

Often it seems the vendors we buy from have no idea if, or want to admit, the specimens they have are dyed... Is the only real way to know they are died the "time will tell" technique (i.e. after a few months the color goes away, and its not because its not suitable to live in your tank), or, if you actually find it changes the color of the water due to it expelling all the dye (since its a recent dye)?
