What is the easiest way to run carbon? I have a fluval 404 but the attachment broke that the 3/4" tubing connected to. Blue Sierra has replacements, but not the bolts to screw your tubes on tight...

Can I just rubber band a bag over the intake of a powerhead/pump?

Not sure what you are asking here? If you have a spot in your sump you can fill a micron sock with carbon and drop it in there. I ahve seen that done with phosphate removers and such.

I thought you needed a high level of flow through the carbon bag?

I use a Magnum H.O.T. to run carbon in. You can drop a bag of carbon in your sump and will work ok but its better to force water through it.

i'd try to get the fluval fixed. that is the best way to run carbon in your situation. before i had a fluval i would put a micron sack of carbon in my overflow and force water through it that way.

which bolts are you talking about on the fluval? the little plastic screw downs that cover the hoses? i don't even tighten those down since the hose just slips on over the attachments.

I put my bag of carbon in a filter bag and run it in my AquaClear 300 filter, gets good flow and easy to maintain. I leave the spong, etc. out of the filter but either way will work. :)

If you have a sump, look for a fluidized Reactor - Phosban, LifeGaurd, Deltec. They use a small pump and are the most efficient means of carbon use.

They all 3 work on the same principal, just have different mechanisms for getting the media in and out with varying degress of effort.

Any known issues with running both carbon and rowaphos in the Deltec reactor at the same time? I put carbon in my filter sock. Obviously more efficient in the reactor.

Northcoast Marine(sponser) sells the small Phosban 150 reactors for about $40. They are great for Rowa and/or carbon on smaller tanks.
