Elephant snail?

So I have this black blob that looked like some sort of sponge and didn't pay much attention to it until the wife pointed out it had been moving. From everything I have looked up it looks like a young elephant snail that has not formed its shell yet, Any thoughts?

It has a shell. It is just hidden under the black cape. great critter to have. I have a LOT of them in my tanks. They are my favorite snail.

I find them in my sump only about a 1/4" long. soo tiny and then the ones in my tanks are big. some are over 2" long. They are typically nocturnal. keep an eye out after lights out. you may have more.
