Hey all,
I'm considering getting a tropical marine aquarium after being out of the hobby for about 15 years. But if I set up a tank, I really want to be sure that purchasing marine tropical fish/invertebrates does not contribute to the destruction of coral reefs or fish populations around the world. I've read that many marine tropical fish can now be propagated in captivity (e.g., royal grammas, percula clowns, neon gobies), which can reduce pressure on wild populations. I've also read about the Marine Aquarium Council, MAC (http://www.aquariumcouncil.org/) , an organization that certifies marine fish collectors, distributors, and aquariums that collect, transport, and sell fish in an environmentally sound manner (akin "organic" certification).
Any advice towards these ends would be greatly appreciated. What other marine tropical fish species are raised in captivity? Does anyone know of MAC certified aquariums in the Seattle/Puget sound area? MAC certification would ensure animals I buy were collected using environmentally sound practices. Does anyone know of aquariums who are knowledeable about their source of fish so that I can ensure the fish I purchase have been propogated in captivity? Thanks in advance. Russell.

Thats a tough one in this hobby. Kind of like buying a used car. They are all low miles, only driven on sudays by a old lady and always serviced at the dealer.
If you buy from hobbiest then your probably less likely to promote collection all together. There are plenty of folks getting in and out of the hobby on a daily basis, along with locals that stock their tank solely by trading.
