Hello, im new to this saltwater hobby and finding very addicting. Your site is very informative and has helped me so much. Im convinced that I want to get a good skimmer to start off with. I have a 75Gallon tank with roughly a 20Gallon sump. My question is, will the euro reef RS80 be sufficient or will I need the RS100? P.s. im trying to stay within a budget here too lol Thanks in advance for your advice.

engine, if you are on a budget or trying to stay within one you might think of getting an ASM skimmer. They are roughly made like the ER's and I love mine. It works like crazy and I've had no problems.

IMO just about every skimmer manufacture is generous in there ratings, except maybe deltec, bubble king and H&S. i always cut the rating in half.
if you look at the 2 side by side they are almost identical, same height, diameter and pump.

As for the skimmer, IMO, it all depends on what your bioload will be like as well as how much volume your sump will add to your system as to whether the RS80 will be sufficient. It is rated for about 80 gals which means it will be pretty much at it's limit on the tank alone. The RS100 may be a better option to be safe IMO. In any event, the ASM's like suggested, are basically the same skimmer, just a little cheaper so that may be the way to go. Good luck!

Euroreef skimmers are conservatively rated. You should be fine with an 80.

I would go as large as you can afford if you are considering SPS. If you are thinking used, I have a Euroreef 5-2 which is approximately the same as the 80 for $165. It works just fine with SPS on a 100 gal, but Euroreef rates is at 75 gal. PM me if you are interested.

I agree the asm's a great value. They are still using the same time tested sedra pumps.
I personally would shy away from a ER without a sedra. They have been making pump changes so there longevity has yet to be proven.

this is probably the most bang for your buck:, this would be equivalent to a deltec apf600, and it's only $259, and these pumps are higher quality and quieter than the sedra nw pumps, and this is an external recirculating skimmer. the same exact skimmer from deltec costs over $800

I know I dropped my ASM getting it out of the box and it didn't make a dent or crack so for that I was thankful. I also wouldn't try to play hockey with any piece of equipment. This sedra 5000 is super quiet. Compared to when I did not have enough water in my sump to now you don't even know it's on.
I guess you have to fit what you can afford to what works best for the individual.

i've used them several times on customer tanks, as well as my own personal reefs, these perform just the same as their deltec/h&s/ counterparts, and are really waaaaay better than octopus recircs because of the pumps. D.A.S., the company that makes these, gets their skimmer parts from the same company than manufactures parts for deltec.these are then assembled in usa (texas), so it has the same locking neck as deltec, if you look closely at the picture you can see the body, neck, pump and collection cup is the exact same as the deltec apf 600, but it is made here instead of germany.
