Hi guys!

I would like to setup an experiement, and I need the help of other members. My idea is to get 6 10gal tanks with 3 "U" tubes to connect them into 3 systems.

SETUP:

The 6 10gal tanks will be aranged somewhere in 2 rows of 3. The front tank will act as the display, the back tank will act at the sump/fuge.

Each fuge will be linked by a "U" siphion pipe and an equal powerhead constantly pumping water from the display to the fuge. The "U" pipe will of course be returning this water. (I/anybody will supply the powerheads and U pipes)

Each tank will get some very live sand (I/or anybody will volunteer the seeded sand).

Each display will get an aproximately equal piece of live rock. (I/or anybody will volunteer 3 rocks as close to equal as I can find)

All of the fuge tanks will get the same amount of seeded rubble. (I/or anybody will volunteer a bag of rubble)

2 of the fuges will get small equal sized clumps of cheato. (I/or anybody can supply the cheato) 1 will not.

All of the tanks will have heaters set to the same temp. Or maybe if somebody has a warm house they wouldnt need them.

2 of the tanks (one with cheato and one without) will get skimmers (I/anybody can volenteer 1 skimmer, but haveing matched skimmers is essential).

The display tanks will have a VHO 110 watt 10k bulb resting over the line of 3 tanks (I will supply)

The fuge tanks will have a NO 40watt 2700k bulbs restinig over the 3 tanks. (I will supply)

Water will all be mixed at the same time from the same salt type and the tanks will be filled.

The same day 4 (maybe more or less? input?) friendly type damsels (or some other cheap fish) will be added to the display of each tank. (supply source?)

Maybe an equal xenia frag (or other corals) added to each tank? (I/anybody can supply)
Maybe 2-3 hermits in the display of each tank? Snail or two? (I/anybody can supply)

The food will be something like formula 1 flake or similar. It will be weighed into equal portions and put into little ziplocks or those daily pill containers or similar. Each quanity will be amount of food added bi-weekly (open to sugestions on a better feeding interval?)

Now, this is the procedure.

Setup the tanks.

Feed on the feeding interval.

Test the water for no2, no3, po4, (others?) right before feeding time for each tank. (I will donate what I have for testing supplies, but I doubt it will last long enough)

Top off the water when needed, but otherwise dont touch a thing inside the tanks.

The test results will be recorded and logged through out a 2-3 month (input?) period.

At the end of the experiment, test final water conditions and record observations of each tank.

Ok, so, we need an impartial volenteer who is willing to host this experiement. I would definately do it myself, however, my results would be deemed invalid do to personal bias. The unbias person who volenteers will also need to be the person who loads the sand in and dumps in the rubble and rock and cheato to create as ballenced as possible starting point.

It would be good if the unbiased member was also good with skimmers to enable them to tune the skimmers to both be running in peak condition.

So, if folks are interested to see results from this experiment, we are going to need 6 10 gal tanks borrowed for the course of the experiment. I gave all my 10 gals away or I could have provided a few, sorry.

I was thinking perhaps Mojo or some other trusted and unbias local member would be a great to run the experiment. Maybe they could occasionaly post pics or test results in a thread if noteable things occur during the test.

I think no matter how its results go that it will provide some exellent data and concepts for us to ponder and discuss. I think it will be valuable for the whole reefkeeping hobby.

I am totally open to any sugestions to help tailor or improve the experiment or procedure ect.

I am looking forward to seeing how this awsome comunity can come together to help make this happen.

what is the reason, or what started the idea for this experiment? and what are you expecting to find in this experiment?what water source are you using? any supplements/additives/conditioners? what photo-period?

No additives. If the person is local to seattle area, Im sure just tap water will do fine, since seattle tap water is cleaner than most shops rodi water in other parts of the country.

Photo period wont really matter as long as its the same for all 3 tanks.

The purpose here is to learn about how different tank setups function. That info should be very bennifical to anyone with a tank.

Damit you just gave me a new idea for a tank/sump/fuge setup. My wife is going to kill me.

I have a 10g that is just sitting in my back room turning salt water in to salt creep. I could part with it for a few months.

Everybody who wanted some substantial data about the macro algae method should speak up and volunteer. This is your chance for some hard data rather than just cheap talk.

I know a zillion of us have dusty old 10gal sitting in the garage, speak up, act alive and make something happen.
