My Better-Half would tell you I spend more time in the garage than I do with her
don't get my girl started..she is constantly mad at me for that exact thing!!!!!
(not sure if 29 will work... may shoot for 55),
i think a big qt tank is good, but if you have several other tanks up and running, it gets very hard to keep up with water changes..i had a 20g for my qt tank..i upgraded it to my 30g..it really sucks..i have to change more and more water..if you have a sick fish, you could end up doing daily WC's, depending on the problem..i have 5 tanks up and running right now..it sucks mixing new salt water every day..some is normal salinity, and some is hypo water

Ron,

The way I have things setup in the garage now... I turn a valve and watch 35 gallons leave my sump (marked on side of sump)... close the valve... plug in pump... and watch sump fill back up. DONE! Waterchange, in 7 minutes. *grinz*

The reason I'm thinking about a larger QT tank, is for the Tang that I want for my next fish purchase. I know how hard they are to get a healthy one, but I want an Achilles Tang... and because of that I want to ensure even my QT tank is comfortable for him... especially since he will have to spend at least 6 weeks in there, if not more.

yeah, i hear that is a tough tang to keep...i hope it works out, and i expect to see some pics!!!!!! do you already have a tang in the display?? also, where are you planning to purchase the new tang????

Ron,

I do have 2 tangs already. A Yellow Tang, and a Sailfin. Thankfully I can JUST get away with 1 more in a 180... especially since I only have 3 other fish, all about 1.5" in size. A Scooter Blennie, a Yellow-tail Daimsel... and a 4-Stripe Daimsel. Thankfully, I'm NOT attached to those Daimsel's... especially with a 90 sump where they will end up living. :)

As for when I plan on getting the Achellies... I need to get a QT tank setup 1st... then it may be a while after that, depending on weather I can find a healthy Tang. I've heard they run seasonal also... spring & fall??? Patients is a virtue I guess. LOL

Eric, at The Shark Reef, gets most of his fish from a distributor directly out of Hawaii. When I'm ready with a QT, and its ready for a fish... I'll ask him to have his distributor try and pick up a few to ship to him.

This way, I'll have my choice of what comes in, in size and health.

By the way... "The Shark Reef" is a really awesome Local Fish store here... and Eric is about the most helpful store owner I have found! :D

Ed, I'm going to be attempting the legendary Achilles as well, sometime in the near future I hope. I'm planning on a 55 gallon QT. Keep that water rich with oxygen from what I've hear. And expect a long hypo treatment because it *will* come with ich! I'm collecting more details before making the plunge if you want to chat offline; be sure to drop me a note and let me know how it's going. Would be good to learn from eachother in regards to this fish.

I'm a little unsure of what order to add him with regards to the other fish, as I'd like to put a purple tang in as well (will have a hippo, purple, and Achilles).

I'd like to have one in a QT tank by Christmas (I keep hinting thats what I want... have to see if I actually get to have it ;)). I already knew it would be at least 6 weeks in the QT... thats why I'm seriously thinking about a 55 as well.

They say you should only do 1 Zebrasoma or 1 Acanthurus type Tang in a tank at a time, unless you have a very large tank. However, my Yellow & Sailfin are best buds... always hangin together, almost inseperatable! :D Part of this is possiblly due to my having them now for about 3 years... starting in my 75, and now this 180.

I would think the 3 Tangs you're interested in Brian should be an easy mixing, since there shouldn't be a ton of aggression between them. Expecially if they are about the same size... I would think that would help them get along better as well.

As for which order to add them to your tank... personally, I would think the Achilles should be last. My reasoning is because this fish will probably grow the fastest, and if its added earlier, it may outgrow what you would find in the other Tangs. I know "Size Matters" when it comes to our Reef's... and a dominate large fish is harder to get along with than a dominate small fish.

We'll have to get together and chat some time about this though. Who knows... if we are both ready at the same time, may be able to get a better sampling of Tangs in to choose from??? Will chat later guy! ;)

Sounds great Ed. I had a few ideas on how I might go about getting one (since as you say finding a healthy one will win you half the battle with this fish), but if you think Eric can get a few healthy ones I'd be all for it. I'd be a little nervous about the 2-3 hour journey back home, but maybe with a battery-powered air pump, a five gallon bucket, and a little heater I could make it work. Looks like we are working within the same time frame since I was shooting for around xmas as well.

Also from what I've read, the hardiest and healthiest come from Hawaii (and it sounds like that's where Eric's distributor is hooked up).
