I have a 5 inch Blue Hippo (in 125g reef tank) that I have had for about a year and a half...he has developed hole in the head and I think it is due to what I am feeding...currently I am feeding frozen cubes of Formula one and Formula two. What would people recommend as a total diet plan for this fish.

I don't think that Formula One has sufficient algae for a large herbivore. Why don't you add a clip of Nori soaked in Selcon?

Read the three articles on HLLE here.

I have used dried nori in the past and it seem to disolve and make a mess in the tank...can one get nori in another form?

Hi jmaxwell,

I agree that you really could benefit by reading the three part series that was suggested. I would add that Hippos eat a fair amount of plankton so adding some Pacifica plankton to the diet should help. It contains some carotenes that help with coloration. Feeding the fish a little blood meal can help with blue colorations. I also like to feed frozen spirulina. However, HLLE is not a simple problem so you can find a lot more out by reading the articles.

Funny that you mentioned the color thing, I've watched my hippo at the early stages when he wakes up, usually he is a pale whitish color, slowly in the light his colors deepen. I feed mine mostly Spectrum pellets, & I clip on some of Sprung's nori sea weed, he nibbles at it but not much. He likes the mush I make, blood worms & Pacifica plankton I may need to try if I can get it. I find that the Pellets he likes the best, I don't feed him much, he does a lot of pruning on the rock work etc..I love my fish, he went down the Stockman 4 or 5 times when he was little, one weekend I found him such in the drain pipe, he was a little bigger then, I reached deep inside, finger deep into the pipe, barely I was able to gently reach under him & slide him out, that was the last time, now I think he is safe from that danger. I love to see where he sleeps at night, that is one thing also, these guys like to find a snug fit, & usually in bed before everyone else.

I have also noticed that they like red gracilla feeding algae. How do you feed your nori? I have found that when it is rolled or bunched up and rubber banded to a small rock it doesn't make such a mess and the fish have to work to get it, I think that gives them something to do all day.

I took one of the veggie clips and using a plastic tie, hung it in the center of my egg crate top. When the nori is in it the current makes it move around. The tang has no problem finding it but the snails haven't found out how to get to it. My powder brown eats at least half a sheet a day. I give him gracilla, ulva and racemosa as a treat. Any that the tang drops, the snails clean up in short order.
