Who uses filter socks in their systems? What are the pros and cons to using them? Opinions? How often do you change them out?

I do on my home system. I gotta tell you, that my original design that is over 20 years old is better, and way less hassle. I used run a tower with 3 drawers that had holes for the water to drip through. Placing cheap filter floss into the drawers made cleaning them a cinch. Most things get better in time, but the filter sock isn't one in my opinion. The acrylic fabrication is much more complex in a 3 drawer tower, but it is much quieter than a sock any day. I use em. When I see how nasty they get, it makes the PITA changing them out worth it :) One thing I don't like is how many Amphipods get caught up in them. But again worth it :)

I do and I am happy with how they perform. I don't seem to get any pods caught in mine.

I never used any. I was a more hands on guy. No sand, no filter socks, no sponges (not even on my pumps) etc. I didn't like the idea of having waste sitting and rotting so I went full commando with tons of flow and let everything stay in suspension to either be used up by corals or skimmed out. Worked well for me, but many ways to skin a cat. :)

I tried using them years ago, but just got away from using them and never saw a difference.
