i know that it has been too long, but i finally setting up my QT today:D . it is a 45gal long so it will be okay for most fish. i have been reading alot about setting them up, so all i need to know is what a good all around treatment is. Is there something that would treat everything? the reason that i ask that is because i am going to get all the fish out of my main tank and QT them just to make sure there is nothing in/on them.

thanks, augustus

Is there anything wrong with any of them now?

If there is nothing visibly wrong,, why stress them?

beacuase since i changed tanks, there has been alot of coming and going problems and i just want to end them all. (e.g. ich, bacterials) it usually goes away but then will come back in a week or so and i will leave the more hardier fish. how long should i do it for?

Good idea!!!!! watch out for secondary infections in the qt..i didn't keep up on my water changes, and now i have been battling all kinds of stuff

if they only have ich, i would go with hyposalinity....if they have bac. infections also, you could use Maracyn treatments along with the hypo

yes..i actually just did both..that was advice from Steve s, so i trust it...make sure of what you are treating before treating with medicine.

how often do you do water changes on that?

heres the thing....i dont really know what they have as the symptoms are different depending on the fish. i was just hoping that there would be a medicine that would take care of most of the "general" deseases/infections.

during the Maracyn treatment, every day!!! it only lasts for like 7-14 days at most, if i recall correctly..you should shoot Steve a pm about it...tell him any symptoms or signs that the fish are showing..he will point you in the right direction and help

Be sure to keep up on water changes when dosing Maracyn or it will dilute the effectiveness. When I treat with it I change 25% of the water daily and then add the next dose of medication (typically once/day).

I think the conversation got off the most important point: there are no current signs of disease and the fish have already made it into the main tank. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. If there is infection, it is already in the main tank and too late. If no symptoms, leave well enough alone. QT ALL new livestock before it goes into the main tank.

Mike, if he qt'd new additions, what would be the point??? the tank is already infected!! he would just infect any addition(s) that were added..the ich is in the tank, even if it isn't visible..he already said that it comes and goes..he would be taking a big risk not treating them..the present fish could die and any new additions as well..i would get rid of the problem once and for all and be done with it. qt all new additions after you treat the problem..leave the tank fallow for 6-8 weeks to be sure!!

If the main tank is infected, how is IT going to be treated? Left empty and fallow? Medicated? If the latter, why remove the fish? If remove the fish and treat them, will the treated fish be put back into the infected tank?

i figured that once i got the fish out, i could put most of the corals in my dads take and i know that there are chemicals that can execute the ich in the water over a 28(a guess, dont know exact amount) day cylce. if worst comes to worse...maybe i will have to empty the tank? all i know is that i have been dealing with this for about 3 months and i am just tired of it.

I wouldn't move things (even corals) into another established tank, they can still carry the parasite. Then you'll end up with two problems instead of one.

If you're treating _all_ the fish with hypo (6 weeks) and the main tank is fallow (for 6 weeks- no new corals, no new LR/LS), the ich will be gone from the main tank as well.

I think the question is, what to do with the corals? Risk infecting another established tank with them? They wouldn't do well in hypo, so treat with medication? If so, why not simply treat the sick tank and not stress out the sick fish by chasing, catching and moving them.
