Finally Got A Qt!!!!

Depending on what the fish have. (I've heard ICH but I don't think it's been confirmed, more a assumption I think). Most treatments will harm inverts. It's always better to treat items in a sperate tank.

Sorry to hijack this thread. I am newbie, so here are my non-sense questions:

1. what is hypo? Isn't it a medication?
2. Real meaning of "the main tank is fallow", please?

I thank you,

Le,

1. what is hypo? Isn't it a medication?
Hypo-Salinity... or a lowering of your Specific Gravity. A reef tank normally has a Specific Gravity of about 1.025. Many organisms are sensitive to a lower specific gravity (like the ICH parasite)... so having a Specific Gravity down about 1.012-1.015 is often used as a treatment for Ick.

1. Real meaning of "the main tank is fallow", please?
Fallow, means removal of ANY animals out of your main tank (fish, most commonly) for a period of time, so any parasites (once again, ICH is most commonly thought of) won't find a host (fish) to attach to... breaking their live cycle.

This is a simplified explanation, but hopefully better helps you understand.

Please, don't hesitate in asking more questions!!! :)

Exellent answers. 2 more questions: :)
1. When you lower your Specific Gravity (down to 1.012-1.015), does it hurt corals?

2. Since you move the sick fish to an QT tank for the treatment. what needs commonly to be in the QT beside the medication? good heater, a powerhead, LR? LS? An "OK" light system?

Thank you for your explanations.
Bests,

Le,

You would NOT run the lower SG in your main tank, because it would harm your corals and other inverts. This is why you will typically hear people having QT tanks for their fish, then running Hypo there.

Your QT tank will need heater, and in most cases people use a hang-on bio-wheel type filter, or simple Back-Pac type filter. NO Live Rock. NO Live Sand. I would use some of the black ABS(?) elbows, because it sinks, for the fish to hide/play in. IF you have to medicate... and you did have Live Rock or Live Sand... it would most likely kill off the "live" from the medication. That would be a very expensive piece of furniture then. Yes, lighting may also come into consideration, depending on what you are putting into your QT tank. Clams, for instance, will still require their stronger lighting... where as fish can do with just a Normal Output florescent.

This thread in Steve Skinner's "Marine Fish Discussion" forum gives a very good listing of some of the meds that may be required for a QT tank... as well as some of the required equipage that may help you better understand how to best use a QT tank;

Thanks Ed, very informative.

okay...so the ich would not live in the tank as long as there isnt any fish in there? if so than i will just go with the qt for about a 6-8 week period.

thanks for all the helpful info guys.

just wanna jump in here and ask

i just got a 45 gal tank, im gonna use it for a qt in the future.

if its setup and runing, and there is nothing in it. Do i have 2 still do water changes?

LOL,

when my Hob is seeded, i will fill the qt with change out water. and it will sit till new comers come.

Just ensure you add a little fish food, I would say every other day... so the bacteria have something to continue working on, and remain active. Otherwise you may find, a month down the road when you use it, that you end up having an ammonia spike when you add a fish to it.

No fish, no ick. It's as simple as that. If your sure the main is infested, what your doing is the best way to be sure it's gone once and for all. Nothing wrong with it and I think your tanks long lived success will be all thge better for that kind of attitude. Don't worry about treating the display, it's uneccessary as long as the fallow period is long enough.

One note though, if your fish are in no immediate danger, allow the QT time to properly cycle. It will go along way to ensuring this goes off without a hitch!

cool good looking.

wont happen for a bit but when it does, its gonna be SPANKING sonnnnnnnnn

thanks guys, i think i finally understand what i am doing:D !

i deffinently will steve...as it has been in there for this long coming and going, another few days wont hurt. if i use the water from my tank(because that is about an average water change) it should be fine to put the fish in, just do a nice acclimation, and then continue with treatment everything should be fine....right?
