I added a firefish to my 8 gallon biocube several days ago. Every night, he has jumped over the back wall partition into the sump. Every morning, I've had to fish him out and put him back into the display. Yesterday, I fabricated an extension to the back partition out of plexiglass so that he could not jump over any more. This morning, I cannot find him. He is not in the sump, he is not hiding anywhere that I can see amongst the rocks. There is no way he escaped the tank entirely, but I did search the floor.
So, I am going to assume he is dead somewhere that I cannot see. I am concerned about the effects of a fish decaying in my tank.
My question is that with a tank this small, would it be better to disturb my rockscaping to look for the body? Or would it be better to do additional water changes for a few weeks?
