hey all

I am trying to get ideas for what to do about flow in my 25 gal nano. drilling the back of the tank is not an option so I am not sure if I should go with 3 or 4 power heads in the tank or get one big in tank pump and run piping up and around the top of the tank with outlets in every corner or something like that. I am thinking that because its a nano that power heads are a better choice but I don't know. I as also thinking of going with an external pump and getting black pvc piping and running that into the tank as well i would just have to make sure that the pump I get is not loud lol

anyone have any other ideas that would be good for me. once my tank is up and going I am goign to have a little bit of everything in it.

I am also wondering how much water flow i will need for it (gph) I am not sure.

thoughts?

Me personally, I'd look into the Tunze nano streams. They are not very bulky and provide a nice wide pattern of flow. I used one in my 24gal aquapod and was impressed with it even using their smallest one. Just a thought...I'd go with atleast 2 (one on either side on the tank) and see how it goes. :)

thats what i was thinking either that or the Koralia NANO for the price they seem ine and 2 of them I think woudl work great with 245 gph each I am just wondering if thats too much flow

Jake Adams...This is his Specialty!

Darklcd,
I would look up Jake Adams as a reference on your topic. Jake is a expert in resperation of corals. A wealth of knowledge on your topic. I hope this helps.
Ed:)

I went ot his site and there is no contact info but thats ok I think that 2 of the nano power heads should be just fine each with about 240 gph thats mor ehten enough

Jakes primary coral prop tank was a 33 gallon class cage tank. I am assuming that is a tank that over 30 inches long. Jake used two maxi jet 1200s with a Chauvet 405 timer for that tank. Maybe someone can find a link to equipment and a picture of his coral propagation system.
What I remember from his teaching PSAS at a club meeting, Aquascaping is very important, along with placement of powerheads.
Again, I hope someone chimes in with link to his work. :)

In my own experience the Koralia 1 is pretty weak- I had one in a 9 gallon and it was just enough flow! If you’re going to do it spend a little extra and get two Koralia 2's. I have a K2 and the K1 from my 9 gallon in a 34 and I’m thinking about swapping out the K1 for another K2.

On the other hand the Koralia's disperse a wide range of current so it may not seem like there is much current to the touch but its actually spread out quite a bit.

yeah thats what I read. the specs say that the nano will do I think 265 gph and I think the rule for a reef tank is something like 15 or 20 time water turn over so 25 x 20 = 500 so 2 nanos should be 530 gph plus my skimmer so it will be ok but maybe the 1 would be better I will have to have a look.

between my skimmer and my powerhead 802 now I have almost enough I just now that the 802 is a direct jet rather then a spread so tats why I am thinkign it might be a better idea to get 2 of something else to have waterflow all over the tank

it all depends on what corals you plan to keep... i like a LOT of flow in my tanks but i keep stonies also... fwiw, my 40B that im getting ready to setup will have 2 modded maxi jet 1200s at ~1600gph each, 1 korallia 3 at 850gph, and a tunze nano stream 6025 which i plan to mod for over 1200gph... that will give me over 5000gph in a 40g display.... plus my return which i dont count in overall flow.... ive never been but ask anyone who has ever been diving on the reefs where our stony corals come from and they will assure you that the water movement and currents on the reefs are insane.... now if you are planning a lagoonal type softy tank, i would say that your plan of 2 korallia nanos should be ok but personally i would go with k2's in atank that size... either way, good luck with whatever you choose :)

I want to have a mix of a little everything. Most of them are goign to me sps and lps but I do want to have a few otehr things as well.

would it be better to get a large external pump and just get some black pvc pipe in and out of the tank?

you could do that... i have done so before and it worked great... beware if you decide to use a SCWD though... anything over 700-800gph and youll tear it apart or at the very least it will switch very quickly... you could always use 2 of them with each one at different ends of the tank on a larger pump (splitting the output of the pump between the 2 SCWDs)... doing it this way creates great random flow fairly cheaply... an example of an external pump to use in this configuration would be a little giant 4mdqx-sc... ive always had great luck with little giant pumps... hth :)

to tel ya truth I have never herd or seen one of those I just did a search on them and they look intresting I am just wondering what size the inlets are.

I was also thinking that I might just use some pvc and run it along the top of the tank

iirc, SCWD connects with 1/2" vinyl hose... best bet is to take one with you to the hardware store if you decide to go that route and pick the hose that fits best...
