All you Saltwater Veterans probably think I'm nuts, but I don't know the first clue to fragging. Are there any rules to follow or things I need to keep in mind? I don't know the first thing. I feel silly even asking. Thanks!

Go to GARF...www.garf.org. The site is a bit confusing to navagate but try I believe "How to Pages" in the left hand menu. They have a wealth of information there. This is pretty much where I learned about fragging not to mention reef tanks in general. (I mean really...we are too busy making anything from saltwater into to sushi to get much beyond that) They are not too much into the "trick of the week" as far as technology goes but they are pretty innovative and "Old School" it seems for the most part. Lots of great articles, just need to take the time to surf thier site. Thier staff is great to deal with too!

There are some other sites and maybe some better. I just really like thier approach and over all I think they have the most thorough info on this. Prehaps some wont agree...but its worth a try....

EDIT: i usually dont edit things,,,I just changed the hot link to .ORG. - Witfull

Yes, it is .org.

Becky - any corals that you are interested in fragging? The type of corals will dictate how you go about the fragging process. Great question.

This is a similar thread I started a while back: What have you fragged?

I just wanted to know how it was accomplished. Everyone talks about it, and I really have no clue. I will go the that site and look around. Thanks for the help!

I saw your post on asking "how to frag"...........

Nothing too it really, depending on what you're trying to propogate.

I see you're in Monroe, welcome neighbor! I'm out in Sultan myself with a too Crowded fully loaded 135 gallon reef.

If you want to come out sometime, I can show you first hand how to make some cuttings. Depending on your tank set-up, you can take some of the frags home with you.

Do you have anything to trade coral wise?

PM me with an email addy for you and I'll send you a pic or two of my tank so you can go virtual shopping.......

Tell me more about your tank critters, lighting, and what you may be looking for (if anything)......I can help you frag some of your stuff if you're just not sure on how to do it...

Wanted to piggyback with a question that I've been meaning to ask. What have people found to be the best/easiest tool to frag softies? Scissors? Scalpul? Razor blade?

~ Steve

Stainless steel scissors work great for me.........I use the cheap $1-2 type that are black plastic with stainless blade inserts.

I use fiskers sewing scissors with the very sharp tip. It lets me cut off individual zoo's. They are stainless as well and bright orange. My first test with fragging was that I cut one mushroom with a razor blade into four pieces, it grew four new shrooms and I was hooked. Once a coral has been thriving in your tank for 6 months I think its ready to frag. I started with shrooms, went to zoos and leather. Now I am attempting green slimer. I broke of a couple of pieces and stuck them in the little things florists use to hold a live corsage. In my opinion it is easy, because the things just want to grow and live and expand. If you do leathers use carbon and check your skimmer because they make a mess. I remove the head in the tank and put it in a bowl of seawater, cut it up outside the tank, and put it back in its tank. I know there is a better way, because my corals all get upset for 2-3 days, and would love to learn how others do it. Ritsuko sent you to the right place, Garf is cool. Hope that helps, it works if you just try it. Steve
