I've had it on for 24/7 for a few days now. My next question is, should I remove my rocks and clean out the excess algae growth after a while? I always hear about harvesting the algae to aid in nutrient export but I don't know if I should take that statement literally or not.

You are talking about a macro, like cheato?
When you harvest the algae, you literally pull part of the macro algae
(cheato in my case) out and, sell it, give it to someone, or take to LFS and get credit.
I usually don't do this untill my refugium area gets 3/4 of the way full.
