Getting rid of algae on LR

I have a large piece of Live rock that is in a 40 gal tank that I want to transfer over to my new 90 gal tank but it has a lot of green hair algae growing on it. I want to get rid of the algae before I put it into the new tank, how do I go about doing this so it doesn't just grow right back and spread all over the place? I wouldn't care but it is really a nice piece, any help anyone can give me would be appreciated!

I did this once a long time ago. I purchased some chemi-clean and a polyfilter. I did not run for skimmer for a few days. I used the chemi clean as directed and hoped that my polyfilter would pull loose stuff out. After a recomended time remove polyfilter. This will make your skimmer go foam like a big dog when you do turn it on. Now, I am not sure what harm it does to reef inhabitats? So please do some research on this? So I suggest a second opinion or a definite safe opinion. I do not want to harm anyones Tank?

Hi, I think i would check my phosphates to see why your getting hair algae! to clean the rock i would pick off as much as possible put it in a buckett with some tank water get a tooth brush and scrub were the hair is, hope this helps.-----My Lagoon

if it is just the one rock, i would pick off the worst, put it in a bucket or tub with heat and circulation alittle flake of fish food now and then and NO light for a couple weeks. You can always bleach it if you want to do it in a hurry.

I think you've received some good advice. Scrubbing the algae off the rocks with a toothbrush will definately help. You could also go the route fishermann suggested, which would be to put the rock in a bucket for a week or so with heat and circulation. Too keep the algae from coming back in the new tank, you will need to keep its food source to a minimum....which means watching the excess nutrients and having a good maintenance routine. Otherwise, you are merely placing a band-aid over the main issue.

Going to put most of my LR in a tub and keep it in the dark with a thermometer and circulation until my new tank is here. I only have a little bit of algae but it is not hair algae. Should do fine!
