Would it work to not have an overflow box but instead use a pump to take water to the sump from the tank and then a pump of the same size to return it? Has anyone tried this before?

It would work as far as I know but there are a few issues.

Heat for one and the other is the risk of flooding. If either pump fails for whatever reason you are hosed.

Is there a reason you don't want to run an overflow box? There are plenty of DIY plans out.

no reason to not run an overflow. where would i find the DIY plans for an overflow. I have one right now but it is far too large for my 29 and I didnt want to buy a new one again was the only reason I was trying to get away without it.

I have an overflow from a 30 gal tank that was taken down about a week ago. I am going to clean it up. You can have it. A trade for coral if you have any available would be cool though.
