Hello, I am in search of some info as a fairly new reef keeper. I have been reading alot of the info about drilling glass tanks, so here lies my problem. I currently have a 450 liter tank that I picked up while stationed in Germany this tour, I know the pros and cons but is there any way to tell temppered glass from regular glass? :confused:I have a hang-on overflow with a wet-dry filter but I would like to drill the tank if possible. Can anyone help me out with this?

Welcome to RF Timothy! :D Not sure if there is a way to tell, but if you know who the manufacturer is of the tank, it would make finding out real easy. :)

ok guys i have a sure way of telling if the glass is tempered or not...... go to you neighborhood hardware store..... your looking for the biggest hammer they got.... if your glass shatters in to million pieces then its not tempered ......... j/k ..... Lion Fish.. i hope you find out what you looking for ......

if
your glass shatters in to million pieces then its not tempered .

FWIW If the glass is tempered then It WILL shatter into a million small pieces. Thats is the whole reason for tempering it. Its safer. Non tempered glass breaks into shards that can cut you in half or sever your leg like a sword. Tempered glass does not do that. Its simply gives you a million small cuts. Trust me, I know.

Regarding the original post. Unless its a huge tank. Most glass tanks are only tempered on the bottom pane. The sides are mostly likely safe to drill through.
