considering using stainless steel clamps for an underwater application: to secure flex tubing to a barb fitting output from submersable return pump. Don't know that I trust plastic clamps. how toxic can rust/ GFO from 2 steel clamps become for a reef tank (60 gallon w 20 gallon sump). One suggestion was to use Pasti Dip on the metal clamps to prevent rust. how reef safe is Plasti Dip ?
Thanks for your reply.

If this is still a issue for you, then you should look into the zip tie guns. They may sell them at Lowes or Home Depot. ( IMO having the opportunity to buy a new tool is always good)
The reason I'm saying this is, IMO you are very concerned and I think it will always be in the back of your mind.
Go with something plastic and you will never have to wonder. Especially if there is a suspected water quality issue down the road.

+1 big ars zip tie. I wouldn't use anything steel, brass, aluminum, copper ect. Anything even stainless imo over time will b vulnerable to rust. I've seen a lil rust in fish tanks. Like skimmer pump screws... I personally don't want any rust in my tanks.
Maybe a pic will help us help u?!
