If you cant afford a generator, at least spend the $60-80 on a power inverter you can hook up to your car battery. A simple 800 watt inverter can go a looooong way.

I doubt it will be long maybe a couple hours tank will be fine... You could always wrap it in blankets to help insulate it and keep it warm.

R.I.P. Mr Crabs.... :-( woke up this morning to find my emerald crab had taken a nose dive onto the bare glass bottom.
I put the net in gave him a few shakes, swished him around.. and i suppose he didnt make it.
Unknown cause.
Peppermint shrimp is still MIA, I did turn over rocks yesterday and was looking in creveses... Still no sign.

Another hermit crab dead.

All the parameters checked out ok. And these has been in the tank for 2 weeks or so..
Time to find the shells today?

Do you think these deaths are related to the power outage? If not, are you doing regular WC's? Lack of iodine will cause your shrimp and crabs to die because they need it to build new shells so they can moult.

I do a waterchance once every 5 days. I dont think its because of the poweroutage. The temps only dropped for 70 degrees.
The shrimp as I said... Is MIA i turned and sifted and looked... Couldnt find him or the remains of him.

I had a couple shrimps and a fish go MIA recently too. I rearranged the rock work and sifted through the sand and didn't find a thing either. Weird!

EDIT - The Firefish just reappeared. Now all that is missing is a Peppermint and a Cleaner shrimp.

Where do you get an inverter? And do you know if they come with a long cable? I've been trying to figure something out for power outages for my tank, and I just don't think a generator would work for me, since I live on a second floor apartment.

I think you should be able to get an inverter at any auto parts store.

Can get an inverter and a car battery, and can have in your apt as backup so you can keep the heaters/powerheads going in an emergency.

Could also get some long cables, but seems maybe tough with a second floor apartment. can you park right under the window?

I haven't had much luck with power inverters if you have a balcony I would think about a small camping generator

At a bare minimum, get a battery-powered air pump. It plugs into an outlet, and turns on when the outlet goes off.
Biggest worry in a power outage is low oxygen in the water, and a battery-powered air pump with an air-stone or two can help a lot.
