This was my first frag that I purchased several weeks ago and had it placed in a crevice in a position that was about a 45 degree angle. Anyway like I have read the side not exposed to the light lightened up, but I even began having tissue necrosis exposing the coral bone if you will. I have as of yesterday placed a frag rack inside and placed it upright, but it does seem that the necrosis has slowed or even stopped yesterday. I performed a WC earlier before that, but I found that the nitrates were at 40ppm, could this have been the reason for the necrosis? I will admit I have overfed my corals and fish and will not do that again. Thanks in advance. :)

Barrier Reef

Yeah I thought so, well it seems like it slowed, but I cant be sure until I go home tomorrow am.

I have had similiar experiences with some corals from there in the past just wondering. nitrates might have something to do with it going from there tank to yours was prob a good change i would supose. The last coral i got from there (sps) i had to trim alot of weather it be dead spot off or some kinda alge off but once i cut some bad tips off it finally grows now. i got that advise a year after i had the coral sitting there not doing anything. It has grown noticably in the last three weeeks since

Hmm, I have bought other corals from there and they have done fine. The necrosis is @ the base so what can I do about it? Here is a pic:

Oh and I turned the frag upside down from the way it was sitting so this is the brown side. The other side is more green and has large polyps and even growth since I bought it.

you know what i am still learning tricks for manipulating sps corals so hopfully somebody will cut me off if this isnt a good idea but here is goes

maybe try cutting at the point were the coral is still good and attach it to a new plug and leave it in the frag rack for a while! if i were you and (don't get cut off of course) thats what i would try, but i may be a bit brazen

I have to but i have had the same thing your having from barrier and my tank has extreemly good water quailty, and perams and then got the same frag from a private person and had it do...well as expected.

there is a rumor flying around "shhhh" but barrier customers are having this same problem quite often! i live on the east side and i herd that from people on the west side as well

i use side dikes. witch is like cutting pliers. a scalpel will not work. but before you do that let some of these other sps sps cutting dudes confirm that that will be a good option

 Really??? If folks are having problems please come talk to us. We haven't had any major problems in our frag tank and nobody has come back to us and reported this. We did have an alkalinity dip for a week during the summer which caused some STN but never necrosis. The STN was all cut away and no frags that were suffering from it were ever sold. On your slimer with necrosis just cut away the bottom piece as was suggested. It should recover quickly. Its common for any shaded part of a SPS coral to lighten or lose color. Even though your Nitrates were likely the cause, please come speak with me directly and I'll frag you another piece of slimer. We are not in business to sell product that dies so anyone who has had problems please PM me!

To stop this before it kills the entire coral you can use a toothbrush (SOFT) in the affected area and then put super glue over it.

If it is all the way around the base Yes Nate is right you can cut the frag just a little bit above the last good place on the coral. Then superglue to a *NEW* Plug

I have reused my old plugs and some of my new frags do not like that too well. Unless you use a grinder and take off the top layer of the plug.

Aww just get a new one it is easier or super glue to a rock!

no disrespect barrier i m sorry for saying anything bad about you directly i do still shop you store and think your store is the best on the west side. rock on

I agree, you are by far the best store. I believe it is my fault due to the high nitrates like was already suggested. I think Barrier's corals have the best selection and healthiest that I have seen anywhere else, so they have my business anytime. Plus they are the most helpful than anywhere else, so that alone is worth its weight in gold!

Hey Nate...its ok:) It is kind of worrying that folks are talking like that. We always strive to offer the healthiest livestock possible so we need feedback like this brought back to us. That way, if there is something that can be done on our end we can look into it. Like I said above...nobody has brought SPS problems to our attention.

I've had nothing but good luck with everything I've bought at Barrier.

Any time I've ever experienced Tissue Necrosis, from SPS purchased from Barrier Reef, OR anywhere else, for that matter...It's almost always coincided with low Alkalinity, in my tank. I get lazy, forget to test, dose, whatever...and my Alk falls considerably. Next thing I know, I'm losing tissue on my favorite SPS. Unfortunately, once this starts, I've rarely had good luck stopping it, on that particular coral. You can try covering the dead tissue and exposed skeleton, with Superglue gel...covering a small amount of the healthy tissue, in the process.

I have also had one experience with STN, where I accidentally overdosed Alk, and lost a lot of SPS corals.

I can vouch for the quality of SPS from Barrier Reef and would hate to see any establishment's reputation injured due to nothing more than "rumors."

STN can usually be traced to a water quality problem, in the hobbyists tank. Look at Alk, Magnesium and flow first.

So maybe the "rumor flying around" should be don't buy SPS unless you're able to take care of them properly and don't "lack knowledge..."

I agree 100%. I have never had any problems with Barrier's frags, which is why I drive around other stores and WAAAYYY out of my way just to go there.(hinting that you should open another store more south ;)). Any time I have any issues with coral it's usually because my idiot self killed it from lack of knowledge and/or details. I don't think it matters what the problem was/is, I have always seen Barrier step up and even taken a loss just to make whomever happy.
