Green Slimer Coral

Reef Aquarium & Tank Building Forum

Help Support Reef Aquarium & Tank Building Forum:

I checked my Slimer frag this AM when I got home and it hasnt spread at all since Wednesday night. So I will wait until I get home from work Monday AM to frag it if I have to. I did perform a 28% WC and just checked my params over an hour after.

Calcium: 400 ppm
ALK: 11 dKH
Nitrates: 5-10 ppm

So since I wont overfeed again my nitrates should be okay, and my ALK will naturally come down. Should I dose anything? Should I frag it tonight rather than wait and see?

Hi Reese,

If its not spreading I would give the coral a few days to get used to the chemistry changes you might have incurred from the water change. Then frag it. Too many changes at the same time might just kill it. If it continues to spread then I would frag it right away. Keep us posted!

I agree with Sid and Barrier Reef.

1. Sid is right about your tank parms. Being that your nitrates were at 40ppm I have a feeling other levels were out of whack also. It would not matter where you bought the coral from if you had it for several weeks and it has issues like this.

2. Barrier Reef from what I have seen on these boards have always been stand up people that take care of their customers. In this thread they did it again. Even though you say your nitrates were at 40ppm they still offered to replace not only your frag but anyone that has bought from them that has had this issue.

I would get your tank settled down for a week or two and then see if that frag still needs to be replaced. If it does then go talk to Barrier reef.

Thanks for listening to my two cents

BTW I love my new lights, lol, shameless plug sorry

I will definitely take your advice, but I never intended in bringing it in to be exchanged. This was my own fault and Barrier has nothing but the best customer service and coral to offer. So I will wait and see. I just got home and it looks the same. I have a koralia nano giving it good strong direct flow, plus a Koralia 1 adding flow and the tank pump. I have a 14g Biocube so that should be plenty of flow.

1st time poster, long time lurker

So I realize that this is now months after this first indecent and discussion but it i rare that one is reading the interwebs and finds a description of exactly the same situation they are in to the letter. I too drive way out of my way to go to barrier reef and absolutely LOVE the livestock and corals there. I recently (when they were offering the buy two corals, get one free deal) bought a 4" frag of bali green slimer, brought it home and placed it at a 45 degree angle in my sps zone with medium flow in the lower area of the tank. All was good.

About a week or so later, as the rest of the frags thrived, this frag started tissue necrosis on the side not exposed to the light. It was very small and since the frag was kinda thick, i just watched. It made a patch on the base, a dime sized patch midway up the frag. After an initial period of TN, they seemed to be staying the same size so I still just watched.

It has been almost a month and the spots are still the same size. There seems to be a slight green edge that is building up around the patch and getting ready to start to re-take it. Strangely though, the tip has now shown a TINY spot of TN as well. I am going to employ the same "wait and see" approach and hope the spot stays small.

So what does this all mean? Probably that my tank had something happening in it that was just different enough to stress out this particular coral. Do I think Barrier Reef has any share of responsibility? Not in the least. They maintain some of the most beautiful specimens available in the hobby in their systems. When a specimen changes over to our comparatively humble systems, I would think that it is not uncommon for some corals to stress.

My slimer is still alive and kicking. Biodiversity acquired. Now it is up to ME to keep it that way. Very cool of you to offer to replace the frag for the guy who posted this thread. In my opinion, above and beyond the call of duty. Keep being a kick-a$$ shop and we will keep driving our lucky behinds as far as they need to go to get there
