So I realize that this is now months after this first indecent and discussion but it i rare that one is reading the interwebs and finds a description of exactly the same situation they are in to the letter. I too drive way out of my way to go to barrier reef and absolutely LOVE the livestock and corals there. I recently (when they were offering the buy two corals, get one free deal) bought a 4" frag of bali green slimer, brought it home and placed it at a 45 degree angle in my sps zone with medium flow in the lower area of the tank. All was good.
About a week or so later, as the rest of the frags thrived, this frag started tissue necrosis on the side not exposed to the light. It was very small and since the frag was kinda thick, i just watched. It made a patch on the base, a dime sized patch midway up the frag. After an initial period of TN, they seemed to be staying the same size so I still just watched.
It has been almost a month and the spots are still the same size. There seems to be a slight green edge that is building up around the patch and getting ready to start to re-take it. Strangely though, the tip has now shown a TINY spot of TN as well. I am going to employ the same "wait and see" approach and hope the spot stays small.
So what does this all mean? Probably that my tank had something happening in it that was just different enough to stress out this particular coral. Do I think Barrier Reef has any share of responsibility? Not in the least. They maintain some of the most beautiful specimens available in the hobby in their systems. When a specimen changes over to our comparatively humble systems, I would think that it is not uncommon for some corals to stress.
My slimer is still alive and kicking. Biodiversity acquired. Now it is up to ME to keep it that way. Very cool of you to offer to replace the frag for the guy who posted this thread. In my opinion, above and beyond the call of duty. Keep being a kick-a$$ shop and we will keep driving our lucky behinds as far as they need to go to get there
