my cap has more like 10 times in a year

The average coral grows about 1" a month.

When i had PC lighting, my orange monti cap grew about at least 6-7 times its original size in a year.
Just acclimate them to MH lighting if its coming from a PC/Vho tank. Or start them low in the tank. I had portions bleach out a little when i tried the new Xm 250 watt bulb. Now everything is fine.

I agree with this. Mine was basically dormant untill I added a calcium reactor and it took off like a wind and grew from about 4" or so to nearly a foot accross in about 6-7 month before I shipped it to a friend.
From what I hear it is still growing fast in the 850g display tank and is well over a foot accross.

I was able to get a couple of nice size monti cap frags from the meeting with Anthony Calfo on Saturday. Do they establish as fast as they grow? I edge glued a couple and stuck one in a hole in the rock.
I guess I better give them some room to grow.

Great, thanks for the info. It sounds like the 2 that I glued should be fine. I will glue the other at an angle and we will see what happens. I would love to see one swirl up.
Can't wait to see growth on the caps. I can see growth in my acros day by day. I just amazes me how fast these things can grow if they are happy.

I accidently broke ours while cleaning the tank, it was about 14" across for a small piece of 3" in about 13mths without a calicum reactor or dosing.
The piece that I did save was the same starting piece and I laid it down, in the flow and high up. It's about 5/16" thick at the base and thins out to about 1/8" at the edge. I wanted it grow ouit a litle different and it has, looks like a gragy bowl and starting to just whirl up at the edges.

I bought some orange cap frags awhile back and once it covered the glue the top took off. It is growing so nice and forming the bowl and swirl shapes. I am so happy with it.

My orange cap encrusted fast, but would not grow out real fast. Then I added a more powerful pump when I got into Acros. Not only did the cap start to grow fast, but the polyps, which were non-exsistent before, started to really extend. Now the cap is starting to swirl and split and grow over itself in a awesome pattern. I can't wait for my green w/ purple rim cap to do the same. :lol:

Did you notice if the cap is thicker. If placed in some flow, they will thicken up - brace them selves against the current. I had a nice neon green cap, that grew this way but dished for about 6-8" then started to whirl up.

I'd like to say that if you do not want your montipora caps to only grow in one large 'bowl' or swirl, you need to "nick" or break apart small pieces of the swirl.
This way, the monti cap will regrow but swirl from where it was cut, thus forming an array of stacking whorls, rather than just one.

Yes as a matter of fact it did thicken up quite a bit after adding the bigger pump. I just picked up a green w/ purple rimmed cap as well. I hope it does the same.
My Caps and Digi's are definately the fastest of the sps...

My ORA style tort seems to grow at good rate also, but tha CA style tort is slow.
My Hydnopora(sp) grows almost as fast as the montipora.
Some Zoanthids grow like weeds - Same with pulsing zenia (sp)
