Unfortunately I'll be breaking this tank down soon. We need more space in the apartment and after getting turned down for two rental houses because of the size of the tank we made the decision to downsize. I'm picking up a 29 biocube this weekend that I'll be drilling and setting up a sump for to downsize to.

That sucks.

Well no new place yet, we made the decision with school having started to stay put for now. But next year we will have to move as my mom is moving out with us from Ohio, and I know we'll have better luck getting a place with a couple smaller tanks than a big one.

So question for you all that have built stands before. Would 1x4s be enough for a 29BC, or should I go ahead and get 2x4?

1" x 4"s alone would not be strong enough, at least I wouldn't.

Are you using any plywood?

On the sides and top, but not in the frame work.

This is the base idea I'm going to be using, except more squarish:

I'd go with 2" x 2" 's and plywood, screws and glue.
I tend to over build stuff just for the peace of mind.
