halide help

so im finaly upgrading to the dark side of halide lights, ive allways been a fan of my pc lights but a buddy has given me a ice cap set up for a 175 watt . my old set up for my 18 gallon was a 96 watt qaud and two 13 watt actinics. i just bought a 175 watt 14000 hamilton. so back to my question

the guy at the shop said the light should be at least 12 inches above the tank, does that mean the bottom glass part of the light fixture or 12 inches from the bulb???

also i really dont want to hang the light fixture from the ceiling im hoping to build some sort of hood to at leat shroud the light i dont want too much light leaking out while im couch surfing so any ideas or pics of diy built hood systems???

So you have HQI 175 watt? or Mogul?

errr ?? the mogul? its the screw in base like a regular light bulb but bigger

Well then its a minimum of 7 inches from the water. the bottom of the fixture. No higher then 12 inches.
