I was wondering if anyone has any info on this metal halide light that is always on ebay. Is it a piece of crap or is it ok. The price seems so good, you know the phrase it sounds to good to be true....I'm wondering if this is the case.....

i wouldnt do it....

in the long run you will lose.....

do it nice or do it twice,

I actually bought a light from this seller a couple of months ago. a 760 watt. I haven't had any problems and am pleased with the light so far.

I bought a metal halide 1200 watt with 2 75 watt HO tubes and LED moon lightes on ebay, it is a great light. I asked the seller several questions and have found this seller was good. but you know how that can change from seller to seller. do your reserch and go with your gut feeling. i bought it for $870.00 and saved about $400.00 to $500.00. Good luck

Fixture is nice and easy to use but the MH ballests are less than desirable. I bought two 36" units for the top of my acrylic 180g and found that although everything worked as promised, that the 10k halide bulb color included was just too yellow for my liking.
So I ended up ordering a couple of Hamilton 14k 250w DE bulbs only to find that the ballest that is used on these units will not fire them. I called the seller up and asked about this and his reply at the time was that he was just now (April of 2007) offering a 15k bulb set over the 10k and that he would be happy to sell me some of those.
Long story short - I ended up replacing the MH bulbs and ballests before finding a combination that suited me.
Moral of the story is that if you plan on or even think that you will be playing around with different bulbs - go with a modern electronic ballest - not something built to fire one particular bulb.

You have to understand that the wattage on your light has to be the one that fits your tank size and the use. If you want to have a growing reef you need between 4 and 8 watts per gal. depending, on your water depth and the type of coral ect. I went with the 8 watts 3x400 to give me the option of running 1, 2 or 3 lights depending on what I had in my tank. remember that the ballast is made for a certain wattage, but you can very the light color by replacing the bulbs i.e. 10k, 15k, ect. Make sure you specify what bulbs you want when you order it.

Hello everyone,

I'm new to Reef Fronteers, and I've found something I can comment on. I bought the 760w setup from a buddy who bought this at www.aquatraders.com. Nothing was wrong with the light I bought, my buddy was going through a nasty breakup and needed to get rid of his tank, so I bought the light. The fixture was only used for 4 months.

The unit had 10Ks but the light spectrum was too yellow for me, so I bought the 20K Odyssey HQI bulbs from Aquatraders. I've had it set up and running now for about 2 months and my reef really seems to like it. I have a 55g tank, 20g sump, 15g refrigum. I have a bunch of soft coral, one maxima, one SPS, inverts, an green bubble anemone, and some fish. The only thing I'm worried about is if I have too much light... can someone let me know if this is excessive?

I hope this helps... so far it seems to be working out great for me. I'll see about getting some pictures up sometime.
