small tank like that wouldn't need many pellets tumbling. wonder if you could find a way to tumble them in the overflow section somewhere so you don't need another pump.

IMO You are way way over thinking this. Many experienced members here have given you good solid advice.

Good Luck

On your pellets/pellet reactors or similar let me give you something to know prior so that you can watch for it.

The concept of a pellets is to provide a solid form of carbon instead of relying on fluid sources such as vinager/vodka and so on. This way you can see them reduce and if you get a bloom you can simply remove them where with fluid types you cant. So a little deeper, as with algae, bacteria (this things that will make the pellets work) operate using a ratio, so something like 200 parts carbon to 25 parts N to 1 part P. So now when they get to the carbon pellets they begin to naturally create a bio-film, the reason we like to see pellets tumble is so that bio-film does not begin to attach the pellets together (the tumbling allows the bio-film to sluff off the pellets and then go to a skimmer to be exported). A BIG problem that can occur is when their is no tumbling or not enough. What happens then is the bio-film connects the pellets and forms in between them, creating their own little environment, same as you will find in your sand and LR. This environment will go anaerobic and then anoxic which will promote the growth of SRB Bacteria (Sulfur reducing) and similar which will then poison your tank. SO regardless of what size pellet or method of deploying them beware of this.
