I got a fancy yellow leather coral. It is not for my tank but a tank I take care of in Franklin KY. I put it in my tank last week to hold until friday this week. It is the only new addition or changed thing in my tank. My favorite piece of montipora. Picture below, is now bleaching in the center of the skeleton. And my other monti is bleaching along a edge. The only thing I can think of that would cause this is the leather producing (terpenes sp?) I have some kent reef carbon and I want to add it, is there anything else that is known to remove them from the water? I have a quartank with 2 x 65 watt pc on it. I am moving the leather there in a few minutes. I am going to go and take a picture of the monti as soon as I get done. Looking for Ideas. I am mixing water for a change as well. Am 0 Ni 0 Na 0 Mg 1140 Ca 400 Dkh in Meq 4.2 Ph 8.3 Temp 78.9 Phos .03 or less barely detectable color change. Salifert kits and Spec. Grav 1.026 with a ATC Refr. Any other ideas to help it heal. I will be back with pics in a few minutes.

Hi Steve :( I'm sorry to hear about this. I thikn you're doing as much as you can at this point. RUn carbon 24//7 for a few days. I would move the leather coral as well.

I hope things will turn around fast. Usually healthy specimens will recover. I know my montipora gets stung by acroporas when a frag or something falls on top of it. The monti gets burnt and the next day has bleached white spots. However, over a few days, new tissue covers it and becomes orange again.

Just will need time to recover.

Its not any worse this morning. The other one, is a little bit worse but not bad. The acros right next to it, has full polyop extension and act like nothing is going on. Will just have to wait and see. It should grow back quickly. That is the fastest growing coral after the blue ridge coral in the tank. I was pretty tore up last night. LOL It will all be ok. Its odd to get so attached to a coral. LOL Who knows. Thanks you all for all your help. I really like it here. Steve

Hi Steve,
I would lower your alkalinity to around 3.0 meq/L yours is quite out of ionic balance with calcium being at 400 ppm. I have seen high alkalinity cause bleaching on some corals. Temperature spikes will also cause bleaching in some corals. The leather coral may have triggered the bleaching event but the coral may have been susceptible due to other reasons. Just things to consider in the future as it is possible the leather may be the only factor.

Regards,
Kevin

Thanks Kevin. Water change should get that back pretty close to balanced. I saw on toecutters where it was just off the top of the target box. Its been off more than that before, but like you said it may of been a combo of stuff. I do know it was not temp though. That is one thing that stays pretty good in my tank. I am really leaning towards the leather. Today my rics are all looking not normal and the color on them is muted and they are not open like they should be. I really think that the leather had a lot or more to do with it. Everything was perfect till I put it in there. I was reading in E. Bornemans book about how some of them can just be deadly to other inverts in a closed inviroment. Thanks man. Steve
