I am trying to help a local high school's marine biology class set up a reef tank. The school has made a few attemps at setting up a cold water tank for local species but has not had to much luck. If thier is anyone out thier that would like to donate some time or some stuff that would be great.

They already have a nice tank, with built in heater and chiller and it uses a bioball system for filtration. The lighting is just a single NO bulb.

Here is what I was thinking:
>Since its a biology class I think we should go for a lot of divercity and microrganisms. So DSB with some LR and a number of softies will be the eventual goal.
>For lighting I would say vho or t5 or power compacts would be great. So if any one has some stuff laying around or would like to donate please let me know.
> also LR, I have some, but could use a little more.
>Live sand, Mine has been in the backyard for a couple of years now,but I do have a bag left from the Plenum experiment
>Once the cycle is done I will put a call out for some softies clippings.

here are a couple of pics of the tank

Mike, What is the tank dimentions and or hood dimentions?

I have a SE 175 MH that I could donate. Not sure if that would work.

Mike, I have a bunch of used actinic vho's. They are 3' and 4' in length. If you could use them, I'd be glad to help out. PM me if you want them. I'd be willing to ship them (ups) if need be.

Would the cheapest lighting be several PC 96 watts bulbs driven by workhorse seven DIY ballasts?

I think pc's would be the best way to go. The tank is shallow, and the plan is for softies and small critters.

Mike,

Contact Helios and ask for a donation - They have T5's that have waterproof endcaps. I put them in the 3 school tanks I support.

You can hold the light entirely submerged and not get shocked.

When you are ready for some frags let me know. I have some of the real easy stuff, xenia, zoas, leathers, colts, mushrooms etc. from the tank at central I maintain. I would be glad to help. Also let me know how it goes with Helios. Ive been looking for someone to help sponsor our tanks.
Good luck and I think that this school is really lucky to have someone like you helping them out.

Yes Colleen and Scott have the rock and sand and are setting it up next week.

thats a real nice offer Jon, but the unit has a built in skimmer and no real place to put another one.
