I would like to build a sump and refug out of a 31 or 40 gal rubbermaid tote and place it under my tank in the stand. The tank is not drilled but is plastic so I plan on installing 2 overflows.
I have a series of questions:
1. Is it realistic to make a combined sump and refugium?
2. Realistically, how much water am I going to be able to add to my system with a 31 gal container? Would it be worth going with the 40gal?
3. Should it be clear? I think it would help to see the water levels etc but is it necessary? Would it be different if it were a sump only?
4. Since I can't glue dividers to the side walls, how do you make baffles? Or can you glue them if you make a wood "girdle" for the rubbermaid?
5. I was thinking about a submersible pump but will it take too much water "space"?
6. I currently have a remora HOB skimmer. Can you put the HOB in the sump or should it hang on the back as designed?
7. The overflows come in different sizes. Do I match the overflow with the pump size?
I f you have any pictures of rubbermaid sumps I would like to see them if possible.
