Hello all, I'm new to the reef tank world and have been doing alot of reading especialy on this site. My problem is, the more I read the more questions I have. I was wondering if there's anyone out there that would mind explaining the what is and why use it of a few terms I've seen used frequently. I'm talking about things ya'll probably think are stupid things not to know about like...closed loop systems, sumps refugiums, and kalk reactors. Any info would be great. Thanks

Be glad to do my best. Closed loop is a circulation system that does not filter water. It has a pump that draws water from the tank and pumps it back in through various inlets. Sometimes using lock lines, or a switching ball valve, or a ocean motion 4 or 8 way outlet system. It helps to increase water flow in the tank.
A sump is a system under the tank that holds water to be filtered. It can be a glass tank, or acrylic, or a rubbermaid tub or any thing inert that will hold water. People put thier heaters, skimmers, filter media, uv sterilizers, and whatever else they want in the sump so it is invisible, and in a central location. It also because of the overflows in the tank keeps the water level in the tank stable and lets you drip your makeup water or kalkwasser out of sight.
Kalkwasser is lime in reverse osmosis water that is driped into the tank to replace the calcium and carbonate hardness buffer that is used by the corals and the acids of metabolizim in the tank.
A kalkreactor does the same thing just a little better
A refugium is a small or large tank in line with the main system without predetors having a either or a combination of , algae, live rock, or live sand, it is a place to let benifiacal small critters grow away from hungry mouths and can be a place to grow algae for nutrient export ( ie trim the algae and throw it away removing the waste products that fed the algae in the first place)
HTH you in some way. Steve

Hey man, I hope i did not discouraged you. But we can talk about it one at a time...

My question is... are you still planning? or you already have some? do you have big plans? and big budget? how about your patience? Is this a temporary hobby of yours? kinda testing the water? of a long term thing...

It will all depend on the answers you are going to make.

oh goodness no you didn't discourage me....quite the opposite. I had a 29g FO about 10 yrs ago and now I'm trying to get a 55 LPS/softie reef going.with plans for something larger in the distant future. this tank is currently approaching 2 months old. it's got 64lbs live rock CC substrate prizm 100 skimmer ( I know not the best but the price was right) moving about 740 GPM with power heads. T5 lighting. for critters I have 2 blue damsels 2 domino damsels and 2 green chromis (most of wich will find new homes eventualy) feather dusters about a dozen various hermits about a dozen various snails a green open brain, a green mushroom colony (about 20 strong) and my latest addition is a toadstool leather. I have a copperbanded butterfly in the QT to control some hitchhiking aptasia, but he's not going in the main tank for at least another 1-2 weeks.

What p-heads are you using? how many t5 lights / wattage? Also, do you have way of knowing saliniyt? hydrometer?

a refractometer is very imporatant. I found this the hard way... I beep using those glass hydros and did not know the it is that off.... way way too salty....

So i guess thats no 1 right now on your list if you dont have one yet... maybe 50 to 60 bucks each...

for power heads I'm using a rio 600 and two zoomedics 228's that sweep back and forth to change up the flow a little bit. my salinity is stable at between 1.023 and 1.024 ammonia almost 0 nitrites o nitrates are very very high but that may be due to the after effects of a mini cycle after adding an additional 10.5 lbs of live rock. calcium is just over 500. I have 4 47inch t-5's (3 10k and 1 actnenic) everything seems to be thriving. I think there's even been a little growth seen in my open brain coral.
