 I bought some calcium additives and didnt know how to put it in. I tried putting it into the aquarium just like that. There chunks and the chuncks went on my rock polyp and now there shrinking and shooting out this gew. Help! Is this toxic for my fish and corals? Whats going to happen?

I dont remember but its white, dry and its more like little rocks. Got it from a friend reefer. But is the gew that the polyps are secreating bad?

Sounds like you added calcium chloride directly to saltwater. As you can tell this does not work and needs to be disolved in rodi water first. The chloride will burn anything it comes in contact with.

The mucus is not harmful, it's like what is in your respiratory system. It is a means of protection and sloughing off foreign substances. All the corals do it. The mucus isn't the problem. it is the raw chemicals that hit the living creature. Like getting lye in your eyes, it stings. If you eat it, it can kill you. I hope none of it fell on your little clam...:(

You need to slow down, do some more reading, develop patience. And don't put anything in your tank that you are incapable of explaining to a 6 year old. I also wouldn't put anything in the tank that you wouldn't be willing to feed to your dog. I would say be willing to eat, but I would hate for there to be a misunderstanding:eek:

--If the "Little rocks" are small--like pellets or pea gravel size or smaller
then they are probably are some form of concentrated calcium chloride and like others said, it should be mixed with filtered water first.
(And dosed according to package directions, or by using this helpful online calculator http://reef.diesyst.com/ )

--If the "little rocks" are the size of the small pebble (or small cell phone)
then they may just be a chunk of all-in-one calcium/trace element supplement which are supposed to dissolve slowly over time....
(never used them myself but my brother-in-law swears by them)
in which case you should be able to pick and up and move it away from your livestock....

In either case--as soon as you get the stuff off your corals you should test your CA and ALK levels to make sure they're okay!

did you test your tank water to know if was low and in need of adding calcium?? Sounds almost like turbo calcium to me. That stuff will sting anything it lands on. I hope you are testing the water using good quality test kits. Calcium, alk. and magnesium have got to be tested to be sure any of those levels are low and in need of using something to raise the numbers. Anything that I add to my tank I do so in a stream from one of my returns or powerheads so it dissipates it throughout the tank or in my sump.

I hope this instability isn't going to cause further harm to the clam. They have got to be in an ultra stable environment. I agree with the need to slow down and read up on what you adding so no harm or damage is caused to the tank inhabitants.
