What is the stuff in Prime, Amquel+ that binds ammonium?

It's for Tom, he doesn't need the chlorine/mine part, just the bind ammonium part.

Do you know where do get it cheap?

Prime and Amquel are not the same but work similar. There are not two parts, it it is set of complex reactions that take place. One reaction deals with the chloramine or chlorine and the other with the ammonia.

Amquel is Sodium Hydroxymethanesulfonate NaCH2(OH)SO3


When it enters water;
NaCH2(OH)SO3 => Na+ + CH2(OH)SO3-


Chlorine reaction;
OCl- + CH2(OH)SO3 ==> (H2N)CH2SO4- + Cl- and other sulfate, SO4-2 ions.

Chloramine reaction
NH2Cl + CH2(OH)SO3- ==> (H2N)CH2SO3-(aminomethanesulfonate salt) + H+ + OCl- and the OCl then goes through the above reaction as chlorine.

Ammonia reaction
NH3 + CH2(OH)SO3 ==> (H2N)CH2SO3- + H2O

Tom may notice that some of the reactions are not balanced and as of yet know one has been able to actually balance them all, not even Randy, as it is not know about all the by-products.

It is thought that maybe one of the reactions is

S2O3-- + 4NH2Cl + 5H2O ==> 2SO4-- + 2H+ + 4HCl + 4NH3


Where can you get it ? You can't, it is a controlled substance, contolled by John F. Kuhns the inventor and is only sold to Kordon under the name Amquel and another prouduct called ClorAm-X. I have never seen it sold in a generic form as Sodium Hydroxymethanesulfonate.

However, it also goes by these other chemical names

The formula is: CH3NaO4S, NaCH2(OH)SO3 (many ways to write this)

Yes, we were suppose to get in trouble but I had issues with my neighbor of 58 years getting sick and having to sell house and move to Arizona for health issues. Her garage was like my garage and now I have none, so I had to make adjustments, to include new roof on house, fix chimney and commitment to MACNA...............not to mention my retirement check being 2 months late. BUT I will be down

I agree. It's always cool to see the formulas etc. but they make no sense to me. I do enjoy reading though.
