Hi !!

It's been quite a while since I've posted on any of the websites. So, I thought I would update you all on what has been going on with my tanks and such.

Firstly, if you're looking for a reason I've been gone, I can only answer with these words: Playstation 2, Xbox, obsession. :D

Well, I've been having a Caulerpa Explosion since I added hang-on DIY refugiums to both my 10g and my 29g. The LFS I go to want it, so I will most likely bring it to them. Since the explosion, I've noticed the Mysid Shrimp and Amphipod population explode along with it. They are EVERYWHERE!! The Amphipods are all a pretty good size and are everywhere in the tank and the refugium. They are more obvious, and easier to find in the 10g. I can only catch sight of them in the 29g when the lights are out for the night and they come out to feed.

I have also been cursed with an unknown predator in my 29g. It seems every time I get a somewhat expensive fish ($30, etc), it magically disappears without a trace. This happened to a Blue Angel and a bigger Blenny. Whatever this critter is, it won't touch the Tomato Clown, the Mandarin, or the Yellowtail Damsel. All those fish have been thriving in my tank since it was safe to add fish. The Tomato is getting big and fat -- as is the Mandarin, and the yellowtail blue damsel has remained his small size. I wonder why this predator won't touch them? I hear a loud snapping sound in the tank every so often. Could be either a mantis, or a pistol shrimp. I have looked all over the tank and tried to surprise it, but so far I haven't seen what it is.

Bristleworms. After getting some excellent live rock from my friends Don and Teri, these HUGE bristleworms have thrived, grown and multiplied in each tank!! Some are over a foot long and most are over 5 inches in length. I've read conflicting reports of whether bristleworms that big eat fish or not. Jury is still out on that. I have to feed those monsters directly and separate from the fish. They all come out when I drop in some Shrimp Pellets. They race across the tanks to get them. There isn't a square inch of substrate in the 10g without a bristleworm in it. I am getting concerned about their overpopulating... should I trap and remove some of them? Won't they just reproduce again?

Well, if you made it this far, I congratulate you and thank you for listening to my ramblings. It's nice to be back!! Here is a pic of my 10g as it looks currently. The corals I have in there are courtesy Teri and TommyP. They've grown and flourished!! You can see how that Caulerpa has turned the left side of the tank into a jungle! I can't wait to get rid of it after Xmas. On the plus side, though, there is some feather in the middle of it that I will try to preserve while removing the insidious grape.

Thanks for reading!!

:D :D :D

Hi Tomv...sounds like that refugium you added is really doing it's thing. I wonder if you have some type of crab hitchhiker or Mantis shrimp that is getting your fish. I know they hide in th rock and when the fish go in the nooks and crannys at night the crabs can easily get them...just a thought. Might have to spend some time with a flashlight at night looking....I love that part...Well Merry Christmas and welcome back to RF

Welcome back! I am glad that your tanks are doing well, and can understand your love for the video games! There is a lot of people who say that the bristle worms are a problem, and depending on what type they are they could be a problem! I am personally not schooled on how to tell the different types apart so cannot be of much help there. If the bristle worms have food to eat there will be tons of them, if they don't have any food to eat then their population will deplete.

Thanks for the replies! :)

Well, I was feeding them separately to make sure that they didn't bother my fish--- but it looks like I've created a monster-- a bunch of them!! So, I will stop feeding them and let them fend for themselves. Hopefully the population will go down.

I'm gonna have to get some red celophane or something similar for my flashlight because the light at night makes things take off pretty quick! If it's a crab, it's gotta be a big one because it takes down fish that are pretty big as it is.

TomV!!!!! Welcome back!

What is your plan on removing the algae? Sometimes, Caulerpa can be a pain to get rid of.

Thanks Nikki! :D

Well, one of my local LFS's wants it. Seems they feed it to their tangs. I plan to pull it and give it to them each time it gets near this level. The only thing I can do is to keep taking them out. I know Caulerpa releases toxins when broken, but several of these have broken and it hasn't affected anything in my tank at all. I just don't want them going sexual on me. I've stuffed clumps of them into my refugiums. They flourish in there and have made the Mysid and Amphipod populations boom big time. There is also another weird kind of "bug" which has appeared with the increase. It's a crustacean about the same size as a copepod but is diamond shaped and has no discernable features. Weird, but it's gotta be beneficial. None of my softies or shrooms have suffered from the caulerpa or the new bugs. The only thing is that the caulerpa is upsetting the trumpet coral and making it look "spiny" on the edges. So, I will be clearing it out as soon as the holidays are over.

Tom welcome back!!!! about time, lol

Great to hear the tank is doing so well

Mike

lol Mike! Yeah, I know, been a while.. Blame video games! LOL!

So, Caulerpa growing like wildfire is a good sign?

There are SO MANY Amphipods. I can't believe how big they get. Much bigger than copepods!

I used to hunt down and kill every bristle worm I could. Now, since I have not really had anything killed by them (except possibly a nice clam), I consider them much as I do the macroalgae in my refugium: when they get big (and bold) simply harvest them (tweezers) and in effect remove nutrients from the system. They got big for a reason.

Yeah, they got big because I thought I needed to feed them to keep them from supposedly eating my fish. :D Now look what I have!
