I agree that that small skimmer/fuge aint gunna do shyte for you.
get that 20g tank/rubbermaid container and do a sump.
then you can buy one of these for cheap:

then for 56g, you need a pump that will give you about 150-250gph @4' of head,
dont get any stupid mag pumps, they will only last a couple years, will heat the water,
and are loud. invest in an eheim return pump:

then I suggest doing vinyl hose with plastic hose clamps to one of these:

now for a skimmer,
as I have said over and over, vertex skimmers suck!! the resun pump on the skimmer is a complete POS,
the bubble plate is a joke, and I wouldnt wish it on my worst enemy.

certainly you could spend more and get better, but for cheap, both of those skimmers will rock a 56g for sure.

I am going to put this on a 56 gallon column. The way I have my tank setup I have the short side to the wall so that is why I need the small version.

glad i asked lol.... ya that bakpak wont do nothing for ya but maybe be a good pod storage!!!! hit up luke33 at reef filtration he has a nac 3 i believe it was, forsale used for 80$ it would be a perfect skimmer for that set up.....for a return i like lagunas but there over kill on that size tank i would go with a quietone there actually sicce pumps and work very well with little heat and no noise..i ran a 2200 for years and never had problems with it...
