So, I was sooooooooooooo inspired by Mike's skimmer that I decided to hot-rod my little cpr bakpak on the 30gal tank. :D so it goes from this,

so now tomorrow I am going to dremel out a little slot in the bottom of the cup so that I can slide the cup down into the skimmer and collect the foam :D

I have been using this upgrade for so many years... Its veryeffective specially if youuse wooden diffuser on a 2 outlet air pump.

Usually the setting is the cup is at least 1/4" below the water line...

With these configuration... it will need to be lifted at least 1/2" above the water line.

have fun...

Have you done th e Maxijet mod yet or are you still running the rio PH on it? I did the MJ upgrade it is head and shoulders better than the air stone without having to plug in another item.

Maxijet Mod???? A friend is setting up a tank, with a backpak... and I've never liked the way the Rio's work on those. Is there a link to this Mod???

Not really a mod. Replace the pump with a MJ. Buy a inlet venturi kit from premium aquatics for $8, thats it.

Don

this one actually came with an MJ1200 already on it. On my 72 I had to replace the RIO with a MJ1200 that I got for FREE from Petsmart out of a dead SeaClone package ;) WOOHOO hehe

IME, the Maxijets is too powerful for the backpac dimensions to handle. A lot of bubbles are coming back to the tank.... I still prefer the rio and airpump combi...

No problem on mine Cesar. Not sure what caused the extra bubbles on yours, but this worked night and day better than the rio or the rio + air stone. Maybe I just needed a really big airpump, but I had a dual output on it and it still didn't perform like the MJ setup. My experience

I am running the MJ and the airstone and I have no bubbles coming back to the display. Just for giggles I messed with cutting the air to the MJ and just let the stone do the work but this created a TON of microbubbles in the display so I turned the air back up and VOILA! micro bubbles gone!

Are the dimensions for the MJ1200 and the Rio600 close to the same? I was thinking of trying this mod but I have the pre-skimmer overflow box on my Bacpac and I want to be able to use it. Will the MJ fit in it? Anyone with a skimmer box using the MJ1200?
