my brother has nothing in his 55 gal tank except a ton of live rock and cc and a DIY wet/dry. He lives in FL and keeps his house about 70 maybe 72 and his tank always seems so cold to me - compared to my tanks. How could his coral and fish be ok in such a cold tank. I was just wondering

depends on what fish, if all he's got are caribean fish/corals, that's about their optimal temp. what fish does he have?

yellow tang/brown tang (not really sure, it looks like a brown fish with yellow fins and small white spots) its not a powder brown but i think he calls it a yellow tang
a niger trigger, two neon blue damsels, and two yellow clarki clowns, some green mushrooms, BTA , and some other random corals

Not sure, if it was around 75 degrees steady then I would say everything would be ok but71 degrees, hmmmmm..uhhhhhh....?

Animals can adapt if the change over was slow and gradual enough, or, as was said, maybe some of them came from cooler water to begin with. Though running at less then optimal conditions may shorten some of the animals lifespans. Better to run at cooler than hotter than average.

The tank maybe warmer than the ambient temp.

Even though the ambient temp. of the house is 70 ~ 72, there's usually enough heat coming from the lighting, pumps and other equipment to act like a heater. In my case even if I didn't have heater my tank can hover around 74 ~ 76 just from the heat generated by the lighting and the pumps.

ok that makes sense, thats the thing he does'nt even know what the temp is. no heater, and nothing in the tank to let you know what the temp is.

No thermometer and no heater? Hmmm even if the animals are acclimated to whatever temp they're at, the temperature shifts would stress the animals in there too.

thats what i keep asking him. he makes fun of my tanks b/c of all the "stuff" that i have in/on/under it...who knows?
