Anybody know? I have 2 plate corals, a long tentacle and a short tentacle. They are both 6"+. What's the biggest one you've seen? I saw an elongated plate (or tounge coral) today that was about 4-5" wide and a foot long! Almost bought it for $40, but the color wasn't exactly what I was looking for.

Well it depends on the family but they can grow more then a foot around in the wild, I believe they stop growing at around 30years???

when do they detach from the base? i have two. when i first found them they looked like aptasia. but now there huge and i dont konw how big they get before they detach from the base.

I don't know, mine are huge and free sitting. However, I've heard that if you have them growing off a rock, it can turn into what they call a factory. One will grow and drop, and then another will start growing one after another.

We used to put a scare down one of the ridges with a knife, after a bit they would start to form buds and drop off little ones

I had a fungia factory going on for a while there. It started as one hijacker...and before I knew it there were 8 on the plug after the first and second one's detached. The first one was around 5 inches when I gave it away.

There are Colonial Fungia and Solitary Fungia. Colonial fungia are the ones that form colonies, with some, eventually breaking off at the base. I have no idea at what age they do this

As for size, there are "Slipper Coral" Fungia, that can grow 18" long, or larger.
