How deep sand beds work

right.....but it is the "life" in it that keeps making me want to use it. My new setup is all new sand, and new water...the only thing I moved over was my LRR from old sump to new and my LR. I keep thinking I am jipping my new tank by not using my old sand.....so confusing.

In sandbeds reeflogic as it is in the wild 99% of the higher critters (as in pods, worms, snails and similar) are only going to be living in the oxygenated zone of the bed, the to 1/2 to 3/4's (although worms can take the big dive to search for bacteria lower in the sandbed but they always have to return to breathe. In the lower reached of the sand the bacteria dont use oxyegen to fix nitrogen products, so their will be none present, and thus no oxygenated organisms present. SO it shouldnt be a big lost of critters, just bacteria that is easily repopulated.
