Long time reader, first time poster, in desperate need of some help. I built 2 counter current PVC skimmers - one that is a recirculating needlewheel and one that is an airstone. Both produced good, dark, skimmate for only briefly over the past month that I have had it hooked up. They produce a ton of small bubbles that rise up fine and then form into a nice foam. Only problem is the foam is always clean and clear. Rarely does any of it make it over the neck and if it does, it produces almost clear skimmate. The sides of the neck eventually get caked with skum, but thats it. Never anything consistant. How high should the water level be in general on skimmers? Why is the foam so clean? I have some high nitrates in my tank I have been fighting with water changes so I know there is PLENTY to be skimmed... Please, any help would be greatly appreciated. Ive read the skimming 101 thread and plenty of others around, and thought I had it figured out, but this is driving me nuts. I can post pictures tonight if that would help...
