So I found a good deal on an acrylic sump but it doesn't have much room for a Refugium. I thought about it and came up with an idea that maybe I could use the sump normally and then I could set my 30 gallon glass tank up as a Refugium and just pump water between them.

what are y'all's thoughts on this idea?

Hello,
If your setting both filters side by side then i would connect them with two bulkheads set at a height where you can install an elbow upside down 1/2"+- off sump bottom. Using two bulkheads in lieu of one will help balance water faster between them at any flow speed. Also could install refugium above tank and gravity feed this way works really nice too:)

Good luck...keep us post with how you do it!

this is how i did the refugium at the center. it is a roughly 10g tank plumbed to the sump of the main tank. i personally like seeing the fuge. it offers a different perspective on our reef tanks. plus it's AMAZING to see just how many little critters are moving around in there.
you could definitely run your tanks side by side sharing one sump. there is pretty much no wrong way to do it, as long as all the water stays in the system even with a loss of power.

It can.. and has been done. (kipiotrowski) has a separate fuge plumbed into his DT and sump. It looks awesome. I am sure he he will be able to give you some pointers.

Thanks for the advice and that is a different look and seems cool to see the critters in the fuge

Yes, it can be done if you set it higher than your sump. You could use your return to tee of a supply to the fuge and have it drilled so that it drains back to the sump. I did this for my fuge setup under my stand.

many ways to do it. mine, a 50g display fuge for a 120g tank recieves water after it has already been skimmed, this already skimmed water doesn't have all the little bits that pods need to feed on and therefore is not "teaming" with pods. the plus side is very very low...ZERO nitrates or phosphates.

Mine is similar to this. My tank has two drains. One goes in to the mechanical sump and the other in to the refugium.

Some cell phone pictures from when I was fist setting up the tank

Here is the refugium tank. It has three sections and then drains in to the return of the mechanical sump

and here is the mechanical side

I really do like this design. It works very well and keeps my tank nice and clean.
