Yea, and it is ugly. I am not sure what it is. Krish had something growing on his lr a few tanks ago. I remember it was a nightmare for him. This looks sort of like ugly green suede. Anybody have any ideas?

Thanks:(

krish,
I have some of that lobophora starting on a couple rocks in my tank, did you end up removing it? Should I be concerned about it? I'm already working on the stinking "cotton candy" algea... arggg So i was thinking about taking the rock out and scrubbing it, will this other stuff come off?

If you have the same stuff, I'd remove it as soon as you can. I had just a small bit of it in my 75gal on one rock and always thought it was a cool sponge. One day, it was ID as lobophora (or brown wafer algae). So I tried chopping it off of the rock, and it kept coming back and started to spread everywhere. It got so bad that eventually I had to put all of my rocks that had some on it in a pot of water and boil it for a few hours to kill it which also killed the rock and turned it into base rock. Quite depressing, but it got rid of it all. If you go to chop it, make sure you get ever piece of it becasue if you leave a little bit behind, it will continue to grow.:)

Well it looks an awful lot like that lobophora except it is definitely not brown. ( I'm grasping at straws here) So maybe it is not the dreaded lobophora. Any of you have that maroon algae that looks a little like suede?

Is that lobophora fairly smooth on the rock or could you peel it off?

If it is lobophora, a toothbrush won't take it off. It has to be hammered off with a chisle although it feels smooth and soft. In any event, with any algae, if you put the toothbrush to it, make sure it is done outside of the tank in a seperate container and that the rock is rinsed off in maybe old tank water before putting it back into the tank. The reason why is you don't want to disperse any algae spores into the tank for the algae to start growing again so you want to rinse it off after scrubbing:)
